Bottle as gift from my brother – drank at home. Phew ! What a gusher ! This takes the biscuit as the frothiest beer I’ve ever had. Once opened there was so much forth that it completely filled two pint glasses and was still gushing out of the bottle ! Finally settled down enough to see that it poured a cloudy ruby brown. Mainly malts in the aroma, but also bitter hops and some hints of nuts. In the mouth the bitterness of traditional hops is immediately apparent, with a creamy texture and flavour of autumn fruits. Some ginger and spice too after it has settled down. Not too bad after the initial mini-explosion !

Cask at Great Western, Wolverhampton. Pours golden yellow with a medium sized off-white head and good lacing. There’s an attractive aroma of honey, summer fruits and hints of citrus. In the mouth it is sweet and juicy with just a smidgen of bitterness. Flavour has floral hops, malts and honey with a little herbal influence coming through after a while. Finish is slightly dry. This is decent, nice and refreshing.

Cask at Victoria, Derby. Pours golden amber with minimal off-white head and good lacing. The aroma has malts, fudge and dried fruit. However, in the mouth mixed hops are prominent giving it a decided bitterness, though with a touch of sweetness underneath. Apart from that the flavour has toffee, caramel, marmalade and hints of autumn fruits. Bitterness lasts into the dry finish. This is a really good old school IPA.

Cask at Smithfield, Derby. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with minimal scummy beige head but good lacing. There’s roasted malts and dried fruits in the aroma. In the mouth it is sweet and creamy but with a slight underlying bitterness. There’s a full bodied flavour of roasted malts, alcohol and liquorice with dried fruit and vanilla coming through later. Finish is slightly dry, fruity and very boozy. This is excellent – and dangerously drinkable !

Cask at Royal Standard, Derby. Pours golden amber with a small foamy off-white head and good lacing. There’s hops and caramel in the aroma plus hints of orange peel. In the mouth it is quite sweet with a creamy texture but also a little underlying bitterness. Flavour has mixed hops, caramel and malts with traces of summer fruits and tangerine coming later leading to a slightly fruity finish. Not at all bad for Shepherd Neame !

Cask at Old Bell, Derby. Pours pale straw with a small foamy almost white head and excellent lacing. The aroma is mainly citrus but melon and mango are there as well. In the mouth it is quite sweet but with some underlying sharpness. Citrus dominates here as well alongside floral hops, grapefruit and hints of spice. A little bitterness in the finish. This is reasonable – but too much citrus for my liking.

Cask at Exeter Arms, Derby. Pours a slightly hazy very pale straw (with a greenish tinge), with a small scummy off-white head and excellent lacing. There’s floral hops and gentle citrus in the aroma. The same combination in the mouth where it is juicy and overall hovers between sweet and sharp. Traces too of grapefruit, melon, lemon and spice. Sweetness wins out in the finish. This is decent – though not really cloudy enough to be classed as an NEIPA (thankfully !).

Cask at Smithfield, Derby. Pours golden amber with a small foamy off-white head and good lacing. Not much of an aroma – just hints of oranges and marmalade. In the mouth it is a continuous battle between sweet malts and bitter hops with the result fluctuating. Creamy texture anyway. Floral hops and citrus in the flavour with hints of autumn fruits and spice coming through later. Finish is slightly dry. This is decent – the citrus is subdued which makes it more refreshing.
