Cask at Crewe Dog, Crewe. Pours a dark ruby with medium sized foamy cream head and good lacing. Not much of an aroma – just vague malty hints. In the mouth it is sweet (but with a little underlying sharpness) and a thick creamy texture. Flavour has malts, caramel and a hint of rye with traces of figs, dates and autumn fruits coming later. Finish is sweet and fruity. This is reasonable – though a little on the bland side.

Cask at Saracen’s Head, Worcester. Pours “bitter brown” with a small foamy cream head and good lacing. Malts are to the fore in the aroma, alongside hints of maple and dried fruits. In the mouth it is quite sweet with a creamy texture. Flavour has malts, traditional hops and autumn fruits to start, with apples and chestnuts coming through later. Finish is dry and slightly sweet. This is decent – definitely the best beer I’ve tried from this brewery.

Cask at Dragon Inn, Worcester. Pours golden yellow with a small frothy almost white head and good lacing. There’s citrus, kiwi and lemongrass in the aroma. In the mouth it is strongly bitter, but with a little underlying sweetness too. The first flavour to hit is gooseberries followed by grassy hops and hints of citrus which increase rapidly. Some tropical fruits come through later leading to a dry finish. This is reasonable but too much citrus for my taste. Also, I would call it an IPA rather than any sort of bitter.

Cask at London North Western, Birmingham. Pours golden yellow with minimal off-white head. Not much of an aroma, just some vague lemony hints. In the mouth the immediate reaction is of how watery the texture is. It is sweet with hints of floral hops and citrus which gradually get stronger. Traces of melon and mango later leading to a slightly sticky finish. Not a bad beer just blandness personified.

Cask at Standing Order, Derby. Pours dark chestnut with a small scummy off-white head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly malts plus some hints of autumn fruits. In the mouth it is sweet and creamy, but also somewhat watery, with malts, traditional hops and pear drops. Some dark fruits come through later. This is reasonable – if somewhat bland.

Cask at Kings Yard, Shifnal. Pours a hazy deep burgundy with a small cream / yellow foamy head and good lacing. There’s a creamy aroma with malts and toffee to hand. In the mouth it is sweet and creamy (almost cloying). In the mouth, alcoholic strength is immediately apparent along with malts, dried fruit and figs with traces of honey coming through later. Finish is slightly sweet. This is excellent !

Cask at White Hart, Shifnal. Pours golden amber with a small foamy off-white head and good lacing. It has a hoppy aroma with hints of honey and malts. In the mouth it is slightly sweet before juicy bitterness overwhelms it with continental hops, citrus and berry fruits. Later there are traces of bitter oranges and ginger leading to a dry and somewhat sticky finish. It’s reasonable.

Cask at Anvil. Shifnal. Pours a very pale straw with a greenish tinge, and a medium sized foamy almost white head with good lacing. There’s floral hops in the aroma along with hints of peach and lychee. In the mouth there is a brief initial burst of juicy sweetness before the bitterness of floral hops comes through. Creamy texture and flavour of citrus, lemon and peach lead to a dry and bitter finish. This is decent but has too much citrus for my liking.
