For me one proper and honest beer review is more worth than 100 ticks without any relevant content. It’s all about respect for the beer and the craftmanship behind. I will always try to do my best for a proper rating than playing the number game.

Backlog august 2016. Unclear and cloudy body under a small white head. Strong aroma dominated by gooseberry, some acidic lemon and citric peel. Taste is refreshing, fruity/berry with nice acidity, mild funk and balanced bitterness. Unusually for an IPA, but interesting and tasty for a curious beer drinker.

Backlog august 2016. Clear golden body under a nice, dense white head. Strong and nice aroma of grapefruit and tropical fruits. Taste is medium sweet malt, fruity like aroma and decent bitterness. Medium body and average aftertaste. Quite straight forward but well made.

Sampled from bottle @ Dark Night 2025. Clear, deep brown body with almost no carbonation. Aroma is quite intense with dark, roasted malt and mild, boozy alcohol. Taste is sweet, dark, medium roasted malt, dry fruits, hint of wood and alcohol. The alcohol sting is lower than expected from a beer at 28% ABV. I was told by Tore that this is made from a base of different Dark Horizon editions together with some other strong beers from Nøgne which results in a fortified mix from a good blend of these beers. Difficult to assess in a beer context, but a fun and pleasant experience in smaller quantities, much similar like the way to drinking Cognac etc.

On tap @ Qvarteret. Slightly unclear golden-brown body under a moderate sized, foamy white head. Aroma is dominated by smoke, smoked meat and smoked mackerel with an acidic touch. Frist impression from taste is smoke and smokes meat, bacon, dry fruit and sweet malt, but the acidity dominates above the sweetness. Some wood also to be found, and the bitterness is low, almost nothing. Some smoked beers tend to seem a bit too sweet to me, but the acidity here helps make the beer feel much fresher in this case. Unusual with a sour smoked beer but I like this one a lot. I ended up with a couple of this.

Bottle 2025 edition. Almost clear, dep red body under a small pink head. Aroma is acidic raspberries (I don’t know how honeysuckle berries smell like), hint of cherry, lemon and mild funk. Taste has acidic berries like aroma, raspberry, cherry, lemon with mild funk and hint of wood. Nice balance in flavors and body, not very intense in any direction- should not offend anyone. Nice and easy drinkable fruit lambic.

Thick yellow body without any head. Aroma and taste is more like a smoothie than anything else, but that’s the point with this one. Plenty of fruit flavors, not too sweet, some acidity, a bit to much lactose. Not bad within the style, still more like a novelty beer.

Sampled after a vertical tasting of some Boon VAT including the regular VAT 108. Almost clear golden under a nice, medium sized white head. Relatively lively carbonation. Aroma is distinct funky with citric fruit, apples and nice acidity. Tart and really refreshing. Interesting to see how much different just 10% fresh lambic does the reminding 90% old lambic. It’s definitively smoother, actually I almost find it too soft and smooth compared with the lovely regular VAT 108 version.

Vertical tasting of VAT 91, VAT 92, VAT 108 and VAT 110. VAT 91 – slightly unclear golden body under a small white head. Nice funky aroma with citric fruit, apple cider and ripe apple with cellar notes. Many elements from a classic Geuze but has the more distinct sweet and sour taste from a unblended Lambic. VAT 92 – Same appearance as VAT 91 and much of the same flavors, a bit more on the fresh apple than ripe, some more citric fruit and hint of bitter citric zest. At the same time the overall impressive is slightly milder and more balanced than 91. Still, I prefer the 91 that I find with slightly more distinct flavors. VAT 108 – Sama appearance as VAT 91 but more lively carbonation and foamier. Aroma as more distinct cellar notes, taste is more acidic and all in all this taste closer to a regular Geuze than the others. Fresher expression, more complexity and smoother with more balance. Very nice and tasty. VAT 110 – Slightly darker golden body than the rest. Less fruity and more wood flavor than the others. The wood feels almost a bit harsh in aftertaste, assume it’s actually notes from the Cognac that might emphasize the taste of wood. Nice enough, but compared with the others this is the less preferred version.
