We’re playing off the camping theme of Beer Camp with a beer we’re calling Campout Porter that evokes the flavors of marshmallows toasted over an open fire. The beer features special ingredients such as malt smoked over manuka wood (a tree native to New Zealand) and manuka honey. Additionally it contains beechwood honey from California and Tahitian vanilla beans to reflect the sweet and roasted notes we were looking for in this collaboration.

That is a weirdly perfect description of 'mashmellow over an open fire.'

From a 355ml can on 9/8/2021. Pours a clear deep amber with a smallish head. Has a strong smoky, campfire ash nose. Has a distinct honeyed sweetness up front, albeit that I don't get the vanilla. Finishes with a strong and very smoky bitterness. The mouthfeel is syrupy, the carbonation moderate. A very bold and interesting brew.

12oz bottle pours with a clear mahogany colored body that supports a nice tan head of foam that leaves behind some spotty lacing. The mild aroma offers up dark roasted malts, vanilla and chocolate malt balls. The taste delivers pleasing integrated loads of malt and molasses sweetened dark roasted malts, milk chocolate, mild burnt malts paired with a thin hazelnut sensation and then dark roasted coffee. Riding alongside the maltiness is a moderate level of sweet smooth vanilla that's binding this together. Pretty solid robust Porter.

Bottle from QClub at home. Light cola brown pour with very fine slightly stick eggshell to light tan head. Aroma is chocolate, little bright orange, some vanilla sweetness. Yum. Taste is chocolate, sweet and bitter citrus, woody malts, vanilla. Tasty. Smooth slightly frothy palate. Quite good.

bottle - Dark brown pour. The aroma is of roast malt and coffee. The full flavor is similar along with some tasty vanilla notes. Medium to full bodied. Excellent porter.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thin, relatively quick-dying tan head, about two centimetres tall. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, nuts, earth, grain, vanilla and a little bit of alcohol. Light to Medium-bodied; Nice toasted malt notes with some almond and peanut-nutiness, along with a dash of dry oak and grain near the end, that shows some subdued, but noticeable hoppiness along with a touch of caramelised sugar sweetness and good dry finish. Aftertaste is quite complex with a lot of sweetness that is masked by the earthy and nutty flavours that finish with a good deal of alcohol and pungent grain and a light spice character and quite thin. Overall, still a very good beer that shows a ton of flavours and complexity throughout, but slightly thin and a bit more geared toward the darker flavour side of things with grain, alcohol, caramelised sugar and pungent bitterness than to a more creamy and silky porter. Still nice to try and worth trying to find if you haven't already! I sampled this stubby twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Fair Lakes (Fairfax), Virginia on 12-August-2017 for US$25,99/twelve pack, sampled at home in Washington after a chilly day seeing the ZooLights with our three kids at the National Zoo in Washington on 12-December-2017 exactly four months later after buying it.

Medium brown, thin bubbly head, has a nice light dark malt nose, cocoa and light fruitiness. Soft, has an off-dry but fudgey finish, too.

Bottle. Clear dark red with a beige head. Aroma suggests sweetness in a vague blanket, roast, some medicinal notes. And wow it is really sweet - but at least it's not so vague: there's honey and vanilla, sweet buns and quite firm woody notes crimp things a bit at the end. That finish - which is bitter, wood-smoky, slightly astringent and has some of the bush herbal notes of the manuka/ tea tree - really pulls the show together. Not much like a porter. Interesting, a promising draft of a better beer.

Sample during the "Collaboration Beers On Deck 2!" event on 08/13/2017. Dark brown color with a medium thick tan head that diminishes gradually to a film. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of smoked malt, coffee and chocolate. Medium body with flavors of charred malt, vanilla, bittersweet chocolate and coffee. The finish is oaky and smokey with a malty aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
