We’re playing off the camping theme of Beer Camp with a beer we’re calling Campout Porter that evokes the flavors of marshmallows toasted over an open fire. The beer features special ingredients such as malt smoked over manuka wood (a tree native to New Zealand) and manuka honey. Additionally it contains beechwood honey from California and Tahitian vanilla beans to reflect the sweet and roasted notes we were looking for in this collaboration.

Deep brown with a fluffy tan head. Some light honey and vanilla over a lightly roasted, chocolate, faint earth porter. Medium bodied. A tasty, good drinking porter.

Bottle from the mix pack from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours moderate brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma has a little smoke and a touch of honey - both of which confuse my nose as to the malt. Med body at least, and the texture is smooth and creamy. Smoke is the first flavor, and honey on my lips the second. The malt seems quite darkly roasty. Vanilla didn’t jump up and shout, but I think it’s there. There’s a lot of flavor and flavor intensity. The smoke is a nice touch.

On tap clear deep dark brown fine dense tan head. Lost of medium roast, chocolate in the aroma. More bitter chocolate and woody tannin like sharpness. Clean finish.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 4/19/2017. Pours fairly crystal clear dark reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, honey, milk chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, marshmallow cream, brown bread, and toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of nuttiness, coffee, wood smoke, herbal, grass, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready/light smoked malts, honey, vanilla, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, honey, milk chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, marshmallow cream, brown bread, and toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of nuttiness, coffee, wood smoke, herbal, grass, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/spicy hop and light roasted bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, honey, milk chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, marshmallow cream, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, wood some, herbal, grass, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready/light smoked malts, honey, vanilla, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Light dryness from hop/roast bitterness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, and lightly silky/sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7.7%. Overall this is an excellent spiced American porter! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready/light smoked malts, honey, vanilla, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. Nicely rich and well rounded in malt complexity, with nice vanilla/honey presence. Was expecting more smoke, but there is a solid amount. Hits the s’mores idea really well. Just a tad too hoppy/bitter than I would have preferred, to be more dessert oriented. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Dark reddish brown, 1 of off white foam.
Smells roasty with chocolate and many sweet notes.
Sweet chocolate up front, roasted malt, that gives away to marshmallow, both roasted and sweet. Mild smoke, finish is on the lightly bitter side. Which is a good thing because the sweetness was starting to get to me.
All that non bitterness gave me the impression of full bodied.
Enjoyable.

Draft at Growler USA. Nice clear ruby amber color. Aroma of fruity coffee. Taste is lightly earthy coffee and plums. Probably the only way I’m going to get a Garage Project beer in NC.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a pitch black color with a medium white head. A nice soft smoky roast nose. Sweet, certainly get the honey here, roast, a bit metallic which I like, some caramel, toffee, vanilla, sweet but not overly so. Quite nice, smoky finish.
