Can from House Of Trembling Madness. Clear amber body with a thin beige head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of wood, caramel and black pepper. Flavour of blackcurrant, cranberry and peppery earth. Thin body with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. It’s quite light for a Dunkel; it tastes like a blend between a Dunkel and a Pilsner.

Can from Beers Of Europe. Appearance - deep amber into browny-red. Thin but attractive head. Nose - toffee and apple. Liht brown bread thing. Taste - burnt caramel and apple again. Malt loaf. Palate - medium bodied, creamy, sweet middle. The finish could be slightly drier, but good. Overall - quite authentic for the style.

Bottle from the Coop, Ipswich. Poured mid brown with a small off-white to beige head. Aroma of caramel, roasted malt, touch of coffee, dark fruits and molasses. Medium plus sweetness, light bitterness. Moderate body, slight oily and watery texture, soft carbonation. Ok.

Keg at Rampant Horse, Needham Market. Dark cola brown. Creamy white head. The taste is so low key I'm struggling to describe it - chocolatey. Malty. Lightest bitter. Some sweetness. Light-medium bodied. Creamy. Average-fizzy carbonation. Long and, yes, low key aroma. My favourite Calvors beer so far, despite what my previous comments may suggest. Slips down despite or because of the lack of flava.

Bottle from Cambridge Wine Merchants, Cambridge. Brown with no head. There’s some darker malts in here, but has plenty of taste with a sweetness in both aroma and taste and a sugary stickiness within its texture.

Bottle. As Norfolk Square Dark Lager. Baker and Larners of Holt, Norfolk. Clear, chestnut brown. Film of sticky, tan head. Looks pretty good. Light nutty malts. Brown sugar. Light fruit. Taste is light dry. Light sweet. Decent body. Easy drinking. Finishes sugary sweet. Dry close. Liked this, despite drinking it 6 months after its BBE!

Bottle from Cambridge Wine Merchants, consumed at home. Second beer in my new digs in Ely. Pours light brown, almost copper/Amber. Thin tan head. Light aroma: chocolate, caramel, cereal. Slightly musty. Taste is a delicate malty sweet, pleasant if not complex. Short to medium finish was a flash of caramel malt in the aftertaste. Nice enough.

Bottle from the Suffolk Food Hall, Ipswich. Attractive deep copper with a moderate cream head and a middling fizz. Sweet Horlicks maltiness up front with some chocolate too. Buttered diacetyl on toast to follow which may put some off but I rather like it in the right place- and it suits this beer. There’s a slightly off sour note in the finish but in general I quite enjoyed this.
