Insanity, 11.1% ABV, is made by aging our Blithering Idiot Barleywine Ale in whiskey barrels. The barrel aging imparts an additional level of complexity to an already intense malt profile by adding a combination of vanilla, oak and whiskey notes.

22oz bomber picked up at Belo Vino in Ann Arbor 05/06. Nothing like a bomber of an 11% ABV beer to nurse all night. Pours a clear orange-ish copper with nice half inch tan head. The aroma seems like sticking my head into a recently emptied oak whiskey barrel. I get whiskey, oak, grain alcohol, maple leafs and just a hint of dark fruit like raisins, figs and grapes. The taste starts sweet with some light dark fruitiness from dark grapes, raisins and maybe some plums. Then the oak and whiskey flavors take over and carry the experience into the finish. There are brief moments of sweet dark fruitiness and even some faint caramel. At the finish is a noticeable warming that borders on hotness. Not the type of brew I crave 22oz of. But it was an interesting experience.

Bottle from Slob - Thanks! Pours a clear amber with a large beige head. Nose is abundant with the barrel aging process; sweet and sherry like. Flavor is very sweet and even more like sherry. Bourbon barrel is even more pronounced. Malty with hints of dark fruit, but I can’t get past the sherry. Definitely prefer the original idiot.

Cloudy brown beer with a lasting white head. Malty aroma with caramel, wine, oakwood with vanilla and some tannic acid. Malt dominates the flavour initially, with quite some alcohol giving it a vineous feel, and after a little while, the wood shows up, and bourbon adds to the wine. On one hand, I think cask/oak aged barley wines are overrated. On the other hand, this is damn tasty!

Odense tasting: Unclear orange with off white head & no lacings. Very sweet alcoholic taste & feel. Vinous. Fruity feel as well. Like "The Wolf " says: After 30 beers this still was amazing. Sticky & full mouthfeel. Nice! Would like the hops to be a bit more visible though!

(Bottle, Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Dark reddish amber colour with brief off-white head. Malty nose with distinct notes of marzipan, toffee, chocolate, vanilla and wood (more like calvados than bourbon). Malty taste with notes of milk chocolate covered toffee (swedish Dumlekola), vanilla, wood and chocolate. Some notes of citrussy hops in the finish. Rather sweet, surprisingly light body considering the abv. Interesting beer. Hops overshadowed by the wood and malt. But i do like the toffee character.

Perhaps the best Weyerbacher I have had. Lots of oak in the aroma. Flavor is sweet with raisins and brown sugar. Very little carbonation. Light brown, unimpressive appearance.

Winter 2005 bottle. V ery nice barley wine full of complexity and the added flavor of oak. Cloudy, dark copper pour with a frothy light brown head. Big aroma of caramel, fresh-cut oak, sugar, raisin, apple with sublte notes of horse blanket. Flavor is very sweet and whisky-like alcoholic. Slight tartness in the finish. Tastes of cherry, caramel and vanilla. Full body and chewy. Above-average carbonation for a barley wine.

The description says it all. Tasted like, shocker!, Blithering Idiot aged in a barrel. The barrel aging really mellow some of the bitterness and added some vanilla and softer notes. The heat from the alcohol is kicked up a little bit.
