Golden in color with a slightly sweet body. Its ester-laden character reveals an enigmatic dance between Belgian ale yeast and candy sugar complimented by a pleasing dry finish. Black Tulip is a versatile beer for food. Enjoyable pairings include mild bleu cheeses, berries and other light desserts.
Mysterious, alluring and seductive, yet tantalizingly elusive; these are the storied characteristics of the Black Tulip.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a hazy dark golden color with a medium sized soapy orange-white head. The aroma was sweet, spritzy and lightly fruity. The flavor was tangy, tart and a little bitter with light fruits underneath and a hint of a yeasty undertone. A bit disappointing.

Bottle courtesy of SS: Poured a clear and bright golden color ale with a big white foamy head with good retention and good lacing as well. Aroma of light peach with some sweet malt and light spice mix in the background. Taste is also a well balance mix between some light peaches, sweet malt and light spices (maybe some pepper) and a yeasty finish. Body is about average for the style with some great carbonation. Texture is not oily nor is sweetness cloying which was well appreciated. I thought this was very well done and probably underrated IMO.

Clear golden coloured body with an orange tint and a thinnish off-white head. Aroma of strong alcohol, malt, hops, apricots, citrus, pit fruits and vanilla. Medium-bodied; Nice strong alcohol flavour with oak and vanilla coming through the strongest. Aftertaste shows pit fruits, oak, grapes, malt and a tiny bit of sweetness, but mostly dark and strong flavours. Overall, a good beer, not amazing - but good at hiding a lot of the truly ’tripel’ flavours. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased over a year and a half ago at Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 28 August 2007.

This may have been dusted with tulip petals, but I was tasting cookies and oranges while I was sipping on white wine, or so I thought. The spicies I like in tripels simply weren’t there, but the full body and well hideen alcohol is well respected. Lots of cookies danced in my mouth at the finish and that can’t be a bad thing.

Hey, this is not a black beer! Of course not, its a trippel. On tap at the Vintage Estage in Boardman. Barely any aroma. Light cloudy yellow with some bubbles in there. I’m told this ssample may be stronger since it is from the bottom of the barrel. Creamy looking head with a few bubbles. Alky is pretty well hidden but not as well hidden as chimay white. This brew goes down smooth on the taste buds. Very nice initial flavor that is easy to take. Enjoyable and well behaved. I am surprised how well this goes down without heat from the alky content. Finish is enjoyable and not offensive. There is a sligh medium low bitterness that fades quickly. Enjoyable and well behaved for a tripel. Much better than those otherwise coarse alky flavored tripels that lack manners.

Thanks to OhioDad for this! A big, firm, white head forms easily over this hazy, lemon yellow Triple. Nice sheets of lace form at the sides. Tart, sour, lemon aroma. A light sweetness lies underneath a big, tar,t citrusy bitterness that dominates this one’s flavor. Some dryness forms on the tongue after the second sip. Some alcohol. This has a bit more body than the average Triple, but not too heavy.

A heavily hopped tripel; it is a less successful blend of styles than Houblon. Very nice hop aroma and a sweet palate like what I would expect from the style. Medium body. An interesting interpretation and a good beer. However, expensive at $7 / 22 oz.

Draught Colour not determinable; small white head. Vegetable nose, grain, drying hay, maybe some Brett, and almond aroma. Very strange mis of sweet, malty, some alcohol, esters, but unfortunately, adstringency without real acidity. Finishes rather fishy, like smoked shrimp. Adstringency is rather aggressive. "Interesting", as opposed to "drinkable".

Bottle, purchased July ’05. I keep focusing on the name and being surprised when this pours out a nice golden color, with a blush of red in the center. Aroma is a light syrup with overtones of medicinal alcohol. Extra strong taste, but not as “beery” as might be expected. Strange rubbery aftertaste, with notes of pear and apricot, then a strong suggestion of honey. My label does not mention the tulip petals, certainly can’t get any suggestion of it in this batch. Despite the distractions mentioned here, it’s a fine, heady drink, at least pleasing to the eye.
