Bottle. Deep muddy orange-brown body with lots of dark sediment; dense foamy beige head. Complex aroma with notes of sherry, caramel, red wine, oak, and some rough boozy notes. Creamy body with initial tart barrel followed by boatloads of caramel and sherry, also plums and brown sugar. Bitter finish with more barrel notes. Soft, sugary, complex and rich. A nice surprise.

12 ounce bottle from the brewery. Dark brown-orange, large foamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of oak, vanilla, whiskey, toffee. The taste is toffee, grape, oak, booze. Medium bodied, hot. 300th Barleywine!

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a snifter. Opaque brown with small beige head. Aroma is caramel malt, medium body, medium carbonation, and small-bubble lacing. Taste is caramel malt, wood, cognac, and a little bourbon.

Bottle poured to a snifter. Murky, brown/red. Nicely smooth for the ABV. I think the cognac aging moderated the bourbon kick. Pleasant blend of toffee, caramel, brown sugar with oak prominent. Excellent overall. I’ll be looking for this again.

Odd Side Ales Colossal Oversight This is a barrel-aged barleywine from Michigan I got from a fellow beer lover in Kansai. At 12% it’s not a beer to be trifled with but it pours a beautiful deep red color with a wispy beige head. The aroma is sweet syrupy caramel with nourbon and cognac plus just hints of oak and piney hops. Full bodied with a raspy carbonation and surprisingly dry finish. The taste is malty caramel, charred oak, bourbon, sweet syrup, bitter pine, fresh green mint and maybe a touch of cognac in the finish. Smooth drinking, this is quite a good big warming BA barleywine for a cold winter night.

12 oz bottle, apparently bottled January 25 or 26, 2016. Pours copper with many fine to small particles, off-white head. Aroma is oxidized, sticky molasses, caramelly malt, plum, oaky. Flavor is molasses, somewhat oxidized caramel malt, plum and raisin, kind of an oaky edge. Pretty tasty overall.

Purchased at Siciliano’s Specialty Market in Grand Rapids, MI; enjoyed at home on a hot night after running quite a bit. Appearance is ruby red with a moderate light tan head. Aroma is pretty complex, sweet, malty, with notes of bourbon and hard alcohol, light caramel and vanilla. Taste is very good, very rich and potent, dark fruit / plum notes, light piney hops, lots going on. Good stuff!
