The Derwent Region with the mighty Derwent River is our home. It is also the home & birthplace of the Australian hop industry and has an excellent climate for growing grain. This ale gets it all ... our own farm grown hops, and Tasmanian grown spelt - the most unusual, most flavoursome grain on the planet - and our very own indigenous souring organisms. It is an utterly unique beer.

Bottle at Chriso going Dutch tasting cash purchase via the Wingman 03/07/14. Hazed pale golden with a moderate off white swirl. Nose is tangy citrics, lemon rind, lychee, spice, citric sherbet, damp grass. Taste comprises lychee, lemon rind, spice, tangerine. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Not really sure what’s this meant to be, it’s a bit muddled, however it is drinkable and comes over akin to a Berliner Weisse!

Craig on Heat Tasting at ChrisO’s. Hazy gold beer, small white head. Palate is light and dry. Fine carbonation. Berlinner Weisse like sourness and seltzer. Little sherbet. Light dried fruits, light orange. Light dry finish. Pretty tasty but not at all clear!

Bottle shared at chriso’s. Pours unclear yellow with a creamy white head. Nice tangy lime aroma, some straw, lemon. Light sweet flavor, slightly dusty, with some cereal, faint corn, lemon, salt. Light bodied with fine, slritzy carbonation. Pretty clean on the finish, some hay, lemon rind, slight acidity, more cereal. Fair.

From a 500ml bottle on 4/11/2013 (bottle labelled ’Aromatic Spelt Ale’ rather than ’Clear Ale’, brew date 9/5/13, bottled 17/8/13, bottle no. 369). Pours a cloudy light golden with a small head. Has a sharp fruity, yeasty aroma which points to what’s ahead. The flavour features slightly fermented apple and slightly tart, sour citrus. Has more than a bit of cider about it. Has a slightly oily palate and highish carbonation. Yet another odd beer from this brewer - they seem to do everything in a sour style. Still, this one is actually quite refreshing, its strangeness notwithstanding.

500ml bottle. Light dirty orange with floating bits. Large white head that filled a weizen glass. Aroma is has earthy yeasty, light lemon, cloves and white pepper. Lightish mouthfeel. Taste has bready sweetness with a little lemon and orange, but is dominated by spices: white pepper, cloves and a lot of Sichuan pepper (prickly ash). I suppose they’re Tassie-grown German hops but they’re really powerful and leave the mouth tingling with spices. Mild astringency at the finish too. Startling. [ 3.5]
As Derwent Aromatic Spelt Ale. Cloudy orange with a small white head. Barnyard, apricot stones, lemons, spices. Light bodied, just slightly slippery, highish carbonation. Tart with grainy and under-ripe stone fruit, moldering lemon and spices. This time it’s made clear that it’s meant to be sour and was brewed from a sour mash, but it’s actually a bit tamer than last time (if it can really be said to be the same beer). Still, pretty bold stuff.
