Draft @ The Stein & Vein.

Draft: French roast coffee aroma. Cola black, thin tan head, good lace. Dark roast coffee, charcoal. Medium body, soft carbonation, chalky. Very roasty, fairly dry. Love it.

Sampled on draft at Gateway Grill this beer poured a black color with a small fluffy brown head that left decent lacing. The aroma was brewed coffee and vanilla cream. The flavor was toasty malts, chocolate, brewed coffee and vanilla cream. Long finish. Medium body. very nice.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, nutty coffee, caramel, toffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, light dark fruit, herbal, light pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, nutty coffee, caramel, toffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, light dark fruit, herbal, light pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Moderate herbal/spicy hop and roast/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, nutty coffee, caramel, toffee, toasted dark bread, smoke, char, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bittern/sweet balance, and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from hop/roast bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, and fairly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol for 6.9%. Overall this is an outstanding coffee stout! All around awesome dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. Huge on the coffee presence, with an awesome and complex base stout to back it up. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle thanks to a trade! Pours black with a creamy brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma is full of bitter dry coffee with a good amount of roasted malts with a bit of dark grain underlying. Flavor has some sweet dark grains up front but it is mainly bitter dark coffee and some roasted malts.

12 ounce bottle, 4/9/15. Clear dark brown, medium sized foamy tan head. Good retention. Aroma of strong rich coffee, chocolate, vanilla, nuts. The taste is coffee, roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla. Medium bodied, low carbonation, mild lingering bitterness. Nice.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall light brown, creamy head. Aroma of coffee, alcohol, roasted malt, milk, cream and more coffee beans. Medium-bodied; Bitter coffee flavour with hints of milk, chocolate, roasted malt, alcohol and vanilla with even more bitterness on the finish, but exactly what was expected. Aftertaste shows almost a dry, malty and raisin flavour, but the coffee hits at end, along with some light chocolate as well. Overall, a nicely layered stout with some deep coffee flavours, but as expected from the description. Not necessarily worth searching for, but a good beer to have, especially if it’s chilly outside. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Manassas, Virginia on 28-March-2015 for US$2,29 sampled at home in Washington on 26-April-2015.
