Russian invasion!
And that's not about the Falcon square or a Russian submarine in the port. No, an experiment of our brewer Dennis has seriously gotten out of control. Result: The Russian Imperial Stout! In the brewery known as Black Magic. Dark as the night and a troika of bitter, toasted and sweet. A foaming czar, a bear-like beer.

Black color with beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, yeasts. Taste is the same: sweet chocolate, some roasted malts. Oily mouthfeel. Low carbonation. Quite good.

Draught Dense, dark-cream head, receding with textbook lace over jet-black beer. Aniseed, mint, liquorice; sweet and preciously little roast. At last some roast in the flavour, still very creamy with mocha, liquorice, and this strange mint-anisedd streak. Very slick-oily MF, rather well-bodied. Bad? No way. But if you compare what is available on strong stouts in the craft beer world, this is truly a shame...

At Bruges Beer Festival. Pours slightly hazy very dark brown/black. Aroma contains heavy roasted malts, coffee, black chocolate, herbs, nuts. Tastes medium sweet and medium bitter towards the end, with a dry finish. Full in body and decent carbonation. Interesting brew.

Draught at BBF. I heard a lot about this one, which was launched a few months ago as the second attempt by Moortgat to revive interest in their newly acquired De Koninck brewery by creating internationally inspired craft beers, so I was quite curious about it. Very thick, regularly shaped, dense, pale yellowish beige head, colour very dark burgundy, blackish but still translucent. Aroma of hazelnuts, coffee grounds, cooked red cabbage, tea leaves, burnt sugar, wet leather, sage, iron. Dried fig sweetishness, hint dry banana, cured meat umami touch, bit overcarbonated for the style, nutty and toasted malts with a roasted, bit charcoal-like accent in the end, bittering along with some spicy hops and warming, whisky-like alcohol. Decent but much more an export stout than a true RIS, needs more viscosity and ’darkness’ to fully belong to the latter category.
