For this Artista Zynergia project – we went to work with Hanssens Artisanaal. Hanses is one of the last remaining lambic blender in Belgium. Oudilis is our interpretation of a “Belgian style Gueuze” with a slight tweak. No two blends will taste the same!
Blend #1 (blended 7/22/2015) – This blend was done using 2 year old lambic ale and a “Berliner Weisse” style ale that was aged & soured in Chardonnay barrels from France for 8 months.

Bottle shared with Jack & Bruce. It pours hazy light orange with a small, bubbly white head. The nose is rich, funky, wood, damp leaves, apple cider vinegar, farmyard, mature cheddar and manure. The taste is tart, damp wood, funky, sour orange, lemon sherbet, earth, minerals, decent acidity, white wine, peach and gooseberry with a dry, earthy finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Great balance.

Sampled at the brewery, 9/19/15. Murky orange. Aroma is vinous and funky, with some spice, yeast, and bit wheat. Tart, somewhat funky, and acidic flavor. Dries out the mouth the rest a bretty beer would. Cool blend.

Draught at the brewery release fest, 8/15/15.
Ahhhh yes, the lovely, encouraging smell of poop. I sat outside for a good while, letting the beer warm to an appropriate drinking temperature while enjoying the varied, lovely aromas of horseblanket, wet sheep wool, cow and pig manure and whatever else you want to call it. Ok, so it’s just pretty much sulfur, but it’s more fun to attribute barnyard animal smells to it. Ahem, other than that, there’s a good vanilla-like oakiness, some actual honey-like maltiness and plenty of nice lactic and brett acids. Well-rounded, you might say and quite elegant at its young age. No alcohol, or flaws.
Good dose of lactic and light acetic acids in the flavor also reveal a slick, oily texture that is nonetheless amply malted or perhaps more correctly, bolstered by the tight carbonation. The body does indeed thin out towards the finish, as the exilis seems to draw apart from the lambic notes, adding dry wheat, and soft, lactic acidity. Good use of the barrel here, it’s definitely notable but dosent dominate nor are there any particular flaws. I didn’t find the Hanssens to be too acetic at all. Hanssens oude gueuze is extremely not acetic, from my experiences, but of course, these beers are highly variable.
