Alter Ego is a Black IPA brewed with Citra and Zythos hops. Don't let the color fool you, this isn't your traditional dark beer. This American IPA is bright and citrusy with a vibrant hop aroma.

Dark brown coloured body with a smooth two centimetre tall off-white and fluffy head. Aroma of roasted malt, lightly roasted coffee with some grain, a bit of oatmeal and a little hops evident from higher alpha acids that have since faded a tad. Medium-bodied; Strong roasty malt elements with some grain, a bit of rye or specialty grains and some subdued hop bitterness that shows a decent amount of alcohol (it tastes more than 5,5%) and a lot of bitterness from the roasted malt. Aftertaste is very bitter and pungent with a lot of nice coffee, earth and grain flavours with some pungent hop flavours that show a lot of complexity on the finish. Overall,a nice beer with some good flavours and a smooth roastiness with some oat and alcohol complexities. I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from The Perfect Pour in Elk Ridge, Maryland on 19-February-2016 for US$3,00 sampled on the train from Washington to New York on 01-December-2016.

Keg at the brewery taproom. Pours clear brown with a light, tan cream head. The nose holds burnt pine, earth, mild roast. Moderately sweet with dry earth, faint cocoa, orange rind, roasty malts. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Lightly resinous on the finish, with further burnt pine, bittersweet chocolate, scorched earth. Nice CDA.

12oz can pours a clear brown with some cloudy off white head. Nose is OK, malt, a little salty, smells like the pouch within a ramen packet, some bread crust. Flavor is not great, bread, grist, salt, pepper. Finishes watery.

From a 12 oz can at the DC tasting on March 25, 2016. Poured like a brown ale, medium brown, slightly translucent, light off-white head on top. Hoppy, earthy character with some roasted malts. Sweet malt finish.

Can. Very dark clear maroon brown color, beige head with solid lacing. Fruity pine aroma. Taste is a nice combo of bitter citrus and dark coffee grounds. Tasty.

12oz can. I’ve been sitting on this can for a month or two so not sure if the hops have faded out or deteriorated. As it is, pretty decent for the style. Relatively low ABV keeps it smooth and drinkable, not overbearingly thick and heavy like a lot of other examples of the style. OK. I will have to rerate a fresh one.

Purchased at Bottles and Cans in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home watching a meaningless Bears game before heading out to a holiday party. Appearance is pitch black, moderate consistency, off white head that lightly laces to the glass. Aroma of light pine / citrus hops, light chocolate, decent. Taste is also decent, finishes lightly bitter with a biscuit like / malty quality. I’m liking this one, not too abrasive, easy drinking, enjoyable.
