Souren is named for our pal Søren who runs the show down in the far-off land of New Zealand at 8 Wired Brewery. Taking the long way home after a trip to the States, Søren and his team stopped off in Placentia for a day of brewing, and we created a very California-style sour beer together. Starting with a Belgian-style golden ale base, Pinot Noir grapes were added and the beer was sent to rest in barrels at Bruery Terreux. Over the year, the complexities grew and this grapey, funky, spicy beer was born. Half Kiwi, half American, this one has a rather handsome accent.

Sample during the BBQ n Beer #2 event on 08/01/2020. Clear amber-orange pour with a medium bone white head that dissipates steadily to an outer ring. Stringy lace. Aroma of funky yeast, grape and malt. Medium to full body with flavors of vinous oak, funky yeast, grape must and doughy malt. The finish is funky and fruity with a red wine aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Poured from a bottle. Aroma is acidic with a light vinegar note and some faint lemon with moderate tart cherry and berry notes. Moderate grape notes with some grape skin tannins. A hint of alcohol. Pours a murky, reddish brown copper color with a medium small, thick, tan head that recedes to a thin film that lingers on the edges. Faint lacing and small legs. Flavor has a moderately strong acidity with a light sweetness and a dry finish. Moderate grape tannins add a nice light spicy note. Some berry and cherry notes with moderately strong grape notes. Hints of lemon. Light bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low to medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a nice sour with a good red wine character, but the acidity is a bit acetic and the alcohol is a bit strong.

Bottle via dbarnold. Pours an unclear darker orange, reddish color with a fuzzy head that dissipates completely and leaves no trace and no lace. The nose here is sour cherries and grapes, oak, some sour peach or apricot type fruit as well. Some leathery notes too. Quite sour on the flavor. Fruity too. Wood and some vinegar. Well made, but perhaps a bit much for my personal preference, I would have enjoyed it more if the funkiness would show a bit more to balance out some of the heavy sourness.

On tap at the brewery. It pours a golden orange color with a small off white head. The aroma is nice apricot and minerals. Smells acidic. The flavor has nice sour notes of apricot, grapes and light cheesy funk. Acetic acid is very minimal. The mouthfeel is full for the style with a good fruity backbone before the sour kick hits you. Pretty fun stuff.
