Cooking is a smooth, full flavoured golden bitter which drinks better than its gravity, with a bitter-sweet balance and drinkability, essential in a true session beer.

With its DNA dating back to the days of Ruddles Best, once brewed in Langham just two miles away, Cooking was the first beer produced at The Grainstore Brewery and is still a firm favourite amongst the local cask ale drinkers and landlords.

It is a classic British Pale Ale brewed using Maris Otter and the Kings of British Hops, Challenger and Fuggles.

Cask @ Saxon Crown, Corby. Clear golden with a thin head. Bitter with a very palatable bitterness. It’s light tasting with its malt and has a touch of sweet fruit in its nose.

Pint at the Lazy Otter, Stretham near Ely. Golden brown, a wee bit hazy, small head but considerable lacing. Smells not up to much: vaguely floral with some light apricot. The taste is an improvement, a pleasant tender juicy bittersweet, changing fairly quickly to a more pronounced bitter in the finish. Not spectacular but certainly very drinkable.

Pint in the Brewpub on 9th June 2014. I’m driving, so a Cooking Bitter is the beer of necessity rather than choice. Anyway it comes a nice amber golden colour and has a caramel/malty lead in both the aroma and taste. In the background hops work away to give a slight bitterness and balance to a pleasant session ale that went well with my ’Pulled Pork’ meal I had with it.

Golden amber. Aroma of light hop. Taste is malty-caramel, light hop but decent dryness in the finish. Good basic bitter.
