This medium bodied copper colored strong lager is in a class all by itself. First released in celebration of our 20th Anniversary. Ed Stoudt calls this beer an "American-style Doppelbock" He believes it to be the first high gravity lager brewed with German Malts and American Hops. This brew has a delicate malty palate up front, which is abruptly overshadowed by the dominating ho presence that can be attributed to 1.5lbs/bbl of hops that were added to this brew for aroma & flavor. A hop lover's beer indeed.

Yeast: Bottom Fermenting Lager

Bittering hops: Summit

A lightly hazed dark amber bock with a thin creamy mocha head. In aroma, a smooth caramel malt with light floral notes, perfumey. In mouth, a nice nutty and pungent malt with grassy notes, burned caramel, dark fruits, quite nice. On tap at R&H, June 30, 2012.resin,

Hazy deep copper coloured body with a bit of a muddy rust and ruby tint and a thinnish fast-dying tan head. Aroma of strong fresh hops, caramel, nuts, earth, cardboard and a bit of yeast and alcohol. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong hoppy flavour at first with a good malt backbone, some yeast and a bit of sugars showing through. Aftertaste shows a lot of good fresh hops, some citrus, a touch of pine and herbal flavours with a good sweetness and a nice malt finish. Overall, a nice and strong beer with hops showing most, but this definitely doesn’t taste like a doppelbock or equivalent to me - more of an American Strong or a deeper malted IPA. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from State Line Liquors in Elkton, Maryland on 10-August-2011 for US$2.69 sampled at home in Washington on 10-September-2011.

Draft @ RFD, Washington DC. Pours a clear amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty hoppy aroma. Sweetish malty caramel and dark fruit flavor with hoppy hints. Has a sweetish malty caramel finish with hoppy hints.

Hoppy dopplebock. Hopplebock? Pours well, dark amber with a good-intentioned head. Smells like an IPA, not a dopplebock, which is both good and bad. Starts with a flash of sweetness, but then the hops kick in your teeth. The transition from traditional dopplebock to hop-bomb is sudden and jarring, making this brew seem like an madly overmalted IPA. Carbonation is a little hyper as well. Just can’t dig it. (3/25/09)

Deep brown with a tan head. Caramel malt aroma with herbal hops, citrus, and light grapefruit. Flavor is full of citrus and grapefruit hops, intense caramel malt, earthy. finish is long on the bitter and sweet malts. Really nice and seemingly a cross between an IPA and a bock. Mmm.

bottle pours amber with a medium light tan head. Aroma is all hops, floral, citrus, leafy, very clean with minimal caramel malt notes. Flavor is great, balanced sweet bread and toasted malt, lots of pine and fresh juicy hop notes finishing dry. This is more IPA in character than a doppelbock, but I like it.

Bar Great Harry ($6): Pours an off-white head with a red clear body. Aroma of hops and some caramel malts. The name of this beer implies that it is a doppelbock, but it is in no way a doppelbock in the way that you are most familiar with. Indeed, as other people have noted, it tastes more like an IPA than it tastes like a doppelbock mostly because of the strong hop presence. It is rather bitter and only has faint sweet notes appearing intermittently. It is quite good and it is a somewhat original beer in its design.

Location: Tap at Pony Bar, 5/29/10

Aroma: The nose on this beer is caramel and toast with some pine/resiny hops
Appearance: This one pours from the tap a copper color with a thin off-white head
Flavor: Taste starts off sweet from the caramel, with a pine-like bitterness to the finish
Palate: It has a medium body, with a somewhat sticky feel to it, and soft carbonation
Overall Impression: I thought this was a pretty interesting beer, but I wouldn't call it a hop bomb, so the name may be a touch misleading. On top of that, it is a bit of a difficult one to classify, I wouldn't necessarily call it a Doppelbock, but in the end it isn't really out there, it is just a decent beer.

Tap at Blind Tiger. This brew was money. Poured a deep, dark copper-brown with a moderately dense beige head. Aroma of sweet, German malts. Flavor had a great hop/malt balance, with notes of caramel. Mild bitterness. Straight medium in the body. Pretty clean finish with some lingering candy flavor.
