Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

Obtained with a number of other beers in a flight. Serves up very dark brown, almost black with a nice tan head. The scent is burned toast and I mean that as a compliment. A taste of the brew gives out smoke, molasses and more of that bread. Savoring it after swallowing I get a nutty finish, perhaps pecan. Black lagers with a higher alcohol kick do more for me. But I do not complain.

Thanks to crajun for the trade! The body is a clear very dark brown that hides beneath a frothy, chunky tan head. The aroma is malty, nutty toasted malts, maybe a touch of chocolate or coffee from the roast malts. No hop aromas. The flavor is nutty and sweet, again no hop bitterness that stands apart from the balance. I’d like a bit more body, but this is still a nice drinkable beer.

Draft - Chocolate and caramel. Dark black brown with a nice beige head. Chocolate and lots of caramel, almost like a Rolo. I quite liked this, but have a hard time calling this a black lager.

12 oz. bottle thanks to Phatdog1. Dark brown nearly black color. White Head vanished quickly. Nose of coffee and burnt caramel. Hints of roasted barley. Really thin watery body with a thin texture. Nothing really wrong with it but it needs something to make it stand out. And the body needs to be beefed up. Much better out there in terms of style.

GumboBar, Galveston 12oz: Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is lightly roasted, somewhat chocolatey, and a bit of that slightly grainy lager smell. Taste is pretty similar. Slight bitterness. Restrained sweetness. Chocolate and roasted notes. OK.

Draft... Nose is a touch thin, dark malts, roast, unsweet coffee... Dark brown small head no lace... Taste is malty, not sweet, not particularly bitter either... Lightish body, touch thin, slightly dry finish...

Shaker pint draft at the Flying Saucer in Fort Worth, Texas. The pour is a hazed brown black, with a minimal off white head. The aroma is roast, light chocolate sweetness, and a bit of a dusty coffee ground. Additionally, there is light nut sweetness. The taste is char, roast malt, along with the light sweet of nut and chocolate. The palate is medium light bodied with soft carbonation, and a clean finish. Unfiltered mouth feel. Nice enough Schwarz.
