Saison Brewed with Brewery Ommegang from Cooperstown, New York

Collaboration No. 4 - Saison celebrates our partnership with Duvel Moortgat and our mutual respect for the brewers of Ommegang. A base of pale malt, corn, oats, rye and wheat is spiced with coriander, orange and lemon peel, and grains of paradise. The resulting wort is fermented separately with the house Belgian yeast of each brewery to allow the character of each yeast to shine. The final beers were blended before packaging.

Bottle. Pours golden, with a creamy head. Aroma is fruity, Belgian yeast, with a nice roasted malt back and good notes of spices. Creamy body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is tart with Belgian yeast, oak and kandi, as well as nice roasted malts. Lingering oaky maltiness in the finish.

A rather bold orange with a white head. Aroma is sweet with light spice. Bright fruits, lightly candied, with minor yeast, too. Flavor follows suit but with a slightly rustic quality. The bright candied citrus really adds a nice depth to the lingering sharp yeast bite. Not overly complex yet full of different qualities. Enjoyable.

Bottle. Deep golden body. Big, frothy white head, mostly lasting. Aroma of spice, toasted grain, pepper, musty basement, clove. Hint of soap. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Spice and pepper in the taste, along with a light soapiness ala Hoegaarden. Dry, but not bone dry. Nice beer.

Hazy golden coloured body with a thick, four centimetre tall soapy off-white head. Grassy, herbal scents up front with a dry yeast and hay finish - strong smells, all direct to the style. Medium-bodied; Strong grassy, herbal and airy flavour with a deep yeastie flavour some subdued sweetness showing honey and caster sugar and a bit of a light coriander seed and curacao freshness. Aftertaste shows a lot of yeast and grass with a little herbal note and a light sweetness. Overall, a good saison, but definitely overrated - just because of the name - package this in a different bottle and name and the rating would be much lower. A good beer ,but not great by any means. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Wegman’s in Sterling, Virginia on 21-February-2015 while stuck at Dulles Airport for US$6.99 sampled a few minutes later in my hotel room.

Batch number CA 14 22 5 - 1 / Best by date of 05/2015.
This was poured into a tall tulip (Boulevard style), could be construed as a stemmed pilsener to same.
Anyways, here’s the rest.
The appearance was a semi-hazy slightly dark brown color allowing a light transparency about it. A one finger white foamy head appeared and dissipated within less than a minute. A nice full coating of lacing clung around the glass.
The smell had a light sweet funky grassy to sweet lemon and a light bubblegum aroma that is pleasant.
The taste was mainly sweet carrying a slight grassy to fresh lemon to invade a nice sticky fresh palatable strong grapefruit. Light bready notes accompany the flavor. There’s a strong sticky sweet aftertaste leading to a sweet finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a mostly sipping sort of quality to me. The carbonation is actually pretty smooth but I’m liking how it comes across.
Overall, not as funky and doesn’t have much of any spice to it, still, how everything comes together in this one shows me that this a solid offering that I would have again.

I drank this and wrote notes over a month ago. I was going to make a big-gesture rating because I was finally going to crack the top 5 of Blvd. However, Indra apparently decide to rate some stuff and I am again on the outside looking in, too far from Eric. Here is the basic rating:
Pretty big head that fades to surface covering lacing. Thick gold amber color. Lots of visible carbonation bubbles. Hazy. Fruit and sweet with orange fruit hops. Some blunt esters, some overripe banana. Its a good looking beer and a good feeling beer. The taste not so much. Just blah esters and poor spices. I think the hope is that the Ommegang portion was the crap. Otherwise this beer is a poor indicator of where Blvd is heading. Maybe the worst collab brew to date from them. At least appearance and mouthfeel still good.
