Most beers this dark are so heavy-duty, you could eat them with a fork. Not Session Dark. You've heard of tall, dark and handsome? Well, this black lager is short, dark and drinkable. With notes of roasty chocolate, it's the perfect complement to original Session - a dark beer that doesn't drink like a meal. Session Dark was named #1 in the "Top Ten List of lagers Brewed in the United States" and has nabbed 15 golds over the years, to say nothing of other shiny metallic colors.

Key Food, Flatbush Ave 12-pack ($14): Pours a dark brown color with a light brown, quickly dissipating head. Aroma is very lager oriented... grainy, but with some roasted malts and chocolate notes. The taste is good. Focuses a lot on the chocolate. Finish has some hops in it. Metallic notes are present as well. In any case, it is very drinkable.Very smooth. Not a single offensive thing about it and a lot of very appealing things. Nice to see a schwarzbier taken seriously.

12oz bottle-pours a tan head and dark brown with red color. Aroma is dark malt-roasty/ashy/bakers chocolate, earthy hops. Taste is dark malt-roasty/ashy/bakers chocolate/licorice root, biting earthy hops. A bit more than a session beer.

Cool little squat 11oz bottle pours mahogany with semi loose tan head. The aroma has faint notes of roasty malts and I’m not really getting much else. The taste is even and mild with some dark roasted malts, a touch of spicy black licorice, a wafer thin layer of caramel and a sense of soft yeastiness. It takes on a mild note of chocolate brownie into the finish.

Some cocoa in there. Mildly roasted malt and a touch of smoke, with a lightly sweet malt finish. It surely is something for a session. Dark brown color. Good palate.

11oz grenade bottle. Deep red-black color, thin beige head. Pronounced sugary, burnt dark fruit aroma. Nothing that really blows you out of the water, but a pretty good and authentic representation of the style. Medium bodied, with some chewy chocolate tones, but finishes watery and refreshingly. Mellow brown sugar tones, slight fruity pungency. Wish I had picked up the straightforward session Lager.

11 oz stubby bottle into English pint. Aroma is cookie dough, maybe some vanilla. Pours a dark reddish brown. Taste is roasted coffee, bread, pretty yummy. Taste is mostly sweet and finishes just slightly bitter and sour. Medium carbonation, creamy mouthfeel. I’m really impressed with this one.
