Saranac Octoberfest is a rich flavorful lager. We use imported two-row and crystal malt and balance it with the pleasant bitterness of Saaz and Tettang hops.

Paid $1.69 for a 12 oz. bottle@ Julio’s Liquors. Used a lager glass. Totally clear orange color with small thin white head. Nose is lightly toasted grain. Taste is real weak with a thin watery texture. Taste is faint caramel malt and light weak hop. This is below average.

(Bottle, Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty nose with toast, crisp-bread, orange peel and treacle toffee. Malty taste with notes of dark bread, toast, orange peel, treacle, crisp-bread and a mild spicy bitterness. Medium body, with some malt sweetness. Quite decent.

Pours clear amber into a shaker. Bright white head recedes to skim surface. Butterscotch aromas. Soft butterscotch and caramel upfront turning sour and bitter in the lasting finish. Ouch, drainpour.

Pours clear copper with white head. The mild aroma is spicy, grainy and slippery smelling sweet lagery yeast and malt. The taste is full graininess and malts sprinkled with spicy to floral hops. Pretty nice.

bottle - Drank this one side by side with Schlafly Oktoberfest for comparison. Pours an attractive clear amber with a small white head. It has a caramel malt aroma that’s also a touch grainy. The flavor is a roasted caramel malt and mild hops that leads to a mildly bitter finish. It’s light to medium bodied and has a nice balance. It edges out the Schlafly in my ratings, which differs from the consensus score here. Oh well.

Bottle. Pours a coppery orange with a very large foamy head. Grain and grass dominate the nose, but it seems like there is a very faint smell of oranges (and I’m thinking \"what the heck is that\" to myself and wondering if something is seriously wrong with me.) This mystery presence of oranges also seems to be present across the palate, but it is a little more of a sour presence... hmmm... still, it is faint enough to not interfere dramatically with the creamy texture and sweet and earthy maltiness the beer offers. It is not a dynamic oktoberfest, but serviceable, none-the-less.

Overall Impression: Saranac makes a decent fest beer, it’s basically just a standard American example of this style.

12 oz. bottle from Whole Foods Charlottesville. Orangeish-brown pour with a small white head. Slightly earthy aroma of grain and caramel. Similar taste but with a VERY forward malt sensation. Medium body.
