The quest for independence begins at the grave of trend. Forging one’s own path demands inspiration, and finding a new canvas for nature’s precious bounty deserves endless reward. Memories of its formulation will forever dance in our heads as we pop the tab of this unique take on coffee beer. Built from the ingenuity of North Carolina artisans, we utilize Riverbend Malt barley and wheat and our favorite single lot seasonal from Counter Culture Coffee to maintain the beer’s rich golden color. The exhibition of esters and phenols from our farmhouse yeast meld perfectly with aromas of stone fruit, roasted nuts, and subtle toffee. Look as bright as the sun, but be as bold as the stars.

Pour is a almost red with a small white head. Aroma is pretty much full on coffee. Plenty of roasted coffee. Flavor is pretty much coffee intense as the aroma. Not much or any saison aspects to this, this is all about the coffee. This has a very rich and roasted coffee.

A little too subtle, both with the saison notes and the coffee. Gives up mild hints of grass, clove, and vanilla, then offers a restrained hit of java before fading into a thin, yeasty fade laced with bready tartness and a mild coffee acidity. Nose has traces of clove and wheat with coffee undertones. Pours a murky brown-gold with little head and no lace. Watery texture needs both body and more carbonation. Curious beer, but bland.

Mekelburg’s, Brooklyn tap: pours a bronzed orange with a white head. Aroma is coffee grounds and light maltiness with hints of yeast. Taste is coffee and lightly sweet. Pretty smooth and easy. Nice aftertaste.

Draft at the brewery taproom during RBWG 2014 - Asheville. Pours clear gold with a creamy, white head. Rich Dunkin’ Donuts coffee on the nose. Medium sweet flavor with hearty bready malts, more coffee, light hay. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish, with more notes of coffee, creamy vanilla, maple syrup and dough bread. Tasty, and interesting.

Sample at the taproom. Pours a hazy yellow color with a medium white head that evaporates steadily to an outer ring. Strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of coffee, malt and citrus. Light to medium body with flavors of roast coffee, citrus, malt and herbal yeast. The finish is roasty coffee and citrus. Decent overall.

Keg at the brewery, 17/02/15. Clear golden with a moderate off white covering. Nose is coffee grinds, spice, earthy, straw, light citric notes. Taste comprises toffee, straw, more coffee grinds, light spice. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Interesting offering, coffee comes across well but loses the saison base too much for my liking.

A dark amber saison with a thin off white head. In aroma, sweet fruity caramel malt with light fruity esters, coffee extract, interesting. In mouth, a very thin sweet fruity malt with overbearing coffee, unpleasant and cloying... An interesting experiment, no more. On tap at brewery.
