Draft at the brewery taproom during RBWG 2014. Pours reddish brown with a foamy topping. Good, but certainly punchy with notable alcohol character. Notes of toffee, ripe fruits, a little earth. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Warming finish with some brown bread, toffee, caramel, ripe berries. Not bad, but heavy.

Draft at the source during RBWG. This one is big, boozy spiced butterscotch. Very tasty.

On tap @ source. Shannon says that hellbenders are gotc worthy salamander ticks, so I’m obviously excited for this beer. Pours a hazy orangish brown appearance with a tan head. Fairly sweet, candy, toffee, fruity aroma. Fairly well balanced. Caramel. Moderate bitterness. Booze well hidden. Pretty good.

22 oz. bottle. Dark brown, with ruby notes. Medium, beige head. Big syrupy and caramel aroma, with some earthy hops and some vanilla, smoky notes of scotch. Very sweet flavor up front, with some significant bitterness through the finish. Medium to heavy body, silky and acidic feel, with a little carbonation coming through in the finish. This is a very strong, scotch-esque beer, with an abrasive, yet remarkably delicious flavor. Recommended.

22oz Bottle thanks to JohnGalt1. Pours out a copper topped with a sandy head. Aroma was nice and sweet. A good balance of caramel, citrus, and rich malts. Taste was more of the caramel sweetness, some pit fruit, brown sugar, and a little spice. A very well put together Barley Wine.

22 ounce bottle from Greenlife Grocery in Asheville, purchased in March 2010 and opened 10/12/10. I was doing a bunch of admin work on NC beers, so I needed to crack one. This one pours a clear ruby red color with a medium tan creamy head. Good head retention and decent lacing. Toffee aroma with notes of berries, spices, hops and brown sugar. The taste is toffee, brown sugar, bitter citrus hops, plums, faint spicy notes and a faint bit of roastiness. Medium-full bodied. Good beer. I’m a sucker for brown sugar, which they add to this, so I’m digging this one quite a lot.
