Imperial Porter Aged in Rum Barrels with Spices
Floyd D’Rue is one half of a collaboration between Three Floyds Brewing Co and The Bruery. Both breweries being known throughout the kingdom of beer geeks for larger than life barrel aged beers, it was only fitting that this brew would be something of a similar scale. Working together to create a brand new recipe for an imperial porter at 14.7% ABV, the beer was then laid to rest in rum barrels for one year. Going with a spiced rum theme, additions of vanilla bean, orange zest, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, star anise, nutmeg and fresh ginger were added just prior to bottling. The result is a fantastically robust ale with hints of citrus, rum, chocolate, molasses, exotic spices and toasty oak.

Tap at The Bruery. Pours black with a slight dark tan head. Aroma of spice, chocolate and rum. Full bodied. Flavor of spicy rum, treacle, heat and a suggestion of anise/chocolate. Rum! Delicious.

750ml bottle pours an inky black with a ring of brown head. Nose has a ton of clove and allspice, tons of sun tan lotion, ginger, nutmeg. Smells like a pumpkin beer. Flavor has a ton of sugar, spiced coconut shavings, loads of clove, heavy caramel, some char, some burnt cake. Hot, sticky finish. Messy.

750ml thanks to donnie! Thanks! Poured a pitch black color with a light tan head. Some notes of roasted notes, some boozy notes. Barrel character with some rum notes. Some light spice. Nice and smooth.

From a 750mL bottle. Aroma is as promised with a lot of spiced rum character. Lots of rum, orange peel, cinnamon, clove and anise. I do not pick up much vanilla. Light chocolate notes hiding in the background. Very similar to some pumpkin beers, but with rum and darker malts. Pours black with a moderately sizes, fairly thick, mocha head with alright retention that recess to the edges and lingers. Light leaving and long sheets of alcohol for legs. Flavor is a bit better than the aroma with lighter spice character. Moderate sweet chocolate notes with light roast. Moderately strong rum character. Medium light orange peel with medium clove and allspice. Lighter cinnamon and advise notes. Moderately strong alcohol spice and rum character in the finish. Some lingering chocolate and make notes as well. Mouthfeel is full bodied with medium carbonation. Low, but present astringency and medium alcohol warmth. Overall the spice character in this beer is way too strong at this point. There is no sourness to this beer now and hopefully that does not change so this has some time mellow as the alcohol spice is also overpowering while fresh. I am looking forward to seeing if this ages gracefully or turns to rubbish.

Bottle from the Bruery. Pours opaque black with a small brown head that dissipates fairly quickly leaving decent lacing. Aroma is rummy, roasted malts, chocolate, spices. Flavor is holy hell black licorice, rum, chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, molasses. Medium plus body, very very hot. Fortunately the licorice fades a bit, but this is still just too much, well, everything for me.

750 ml bottle from the Reserve Society. Pitch black color with little head retention. The aroma is a ton of spice and licorice. Reminds me of a over spiced holiday porter. Flavor is strong cinnamon, nutmeg, all spice, old pumpkin innards and traces of rum. The rum and porter base beer is totally overpowered by spice. I had three oz. and could not do anymore. Really not enjoyably for me.
