We decided to brew this beer after Rich and Dan visited Cologne, Germany, the birthplace of the Kölsch style. They loved the subtlety of the flavor and appreciated the craftsmanship required to make a beer like this consistent and good. We were on the lookout for a new summer seasonal at the time and the Kölsch, with its refreshing flavor and crisp finish, seemed like a perfect fit.
Description: Our version of the traditional German Kölsch-style ale. This beer, which is light and refreshing, appears to resemble a lager rather than an ale. The Kölsch style is a testimony to the broad spectrum of characteristics an ale can produce, as well as the brewer’s art. The body is soft and delicate with a dry, crisp finish.

Bottle from Harvest Market, Bedford NH. Aroma is mild basement. Appearance is pale yellow with almost non-existent head with minimal lacing and fair sparkle. Taste is lightly bitter. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with thin texture, lively carbonation and light bitter finish. Overall, not much to this. Admittedly, this isn’t a favorite style of mine, but I don’t think it’s terribly good within the style.

Really? They all got together and came up with the name Summer Beer? Wow inspired. Just like this beer. Clear golden with a mini white head, mild hops, slight malt. Taste is pretty much the same. Little sweet a little bitter aftertaste. It’s just a straight beer.

Draft. Hazy yellow color, medium white head. Aroma of straw and hay. Taste is similar. Light body.

Reviewed from notes.
The appearance had a clear yellow colored body with a soft white lumpy head that lasts about a good three minutes. It leaves some lacing around the sides of the glass and it slides nicely down their sides as the beer goes down. The carbonation is slowly rising.
The smell had some lemon and wheaty grains, basically balanced well.
The taste was mostly sweet through the lemon and the wheaty grains, leaves you wanting more.
The palate was light yet well balanced with a clean finish in this. This is a pretty sessionable beer.
Overall, this makes actually a very good summer beer. I’ve had several of these before I decided to give a it a review so I could be as fair as possible. I would definitely have this again. I wasn’t actually expecting it to be this good. This may be my favorite by Harpoon. Well done!

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 8/19/2012. Pours a lightly cloudy golden straw color with a nice 1-2 finger fluffy white head with nice retention, that reduces to a good cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of pear, bread, lemon, cracker, herbal, grass, floral, light pepper, and earthy spiciness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance, but they are quite muted. Taste of lemon zest, pear, bread, cracker, herbal, floral, grass, light pepper, and earthy spiciness. Light spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of pear, lemon, bread, herbal, grass, and pepper on the finish for a short bit. Nice balance of flavors, with a good malt/hop balance; a touch watered down; zero cloying flavors after the finish as expected. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a nice kolsch. Nice flavor balance and very smooth to drink. A pleasantly enjoyable offering.

Seemed a little bit on the bitter side for a kolsch. Light bodied, but too sharp of a taste to be labelled a summer beer,, was expecting something smoother...

A blonde ale with a thin white head. In aroma, a light chalky malt with faint German hops. In mouth, a crisp malt with German hops, not bad. Tasted at Raquette River Beer and Wine Fest, July 13 2012.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a clear orange color with a small white head. A sweet fruity nose. Very clean with oranges, fairly spicy, almost tasted dirty, apples. OK.
