Most people who know me can tell you I love statistics. So a 10K beer is nice to celebrate the milestone, but since Ratebeer allows me to also rate cider, perry, mead and sake’s this isn’t really my 10000th beer rating is it? So we’ve created a special edtition for the real 10000th beer rating, excluding the 158 other beverages I’ve rated over the years. This very limited special edition was only sold on draught at Van Moll during Benzai’s 10K release party and only 41 bottles have been made. The beer has been aged on bourbon soaked oak chips with some coffee beans added for extra coffee aroma and flavour in the background. Apart from Colin (dEnk / 8-Bit, recipe & brewing), Erwin (Van Moll, recipe & brewing) and André (dutchdrebus, label design) I’d like to thank all of you for sharing beers with me and having a good time. Cheers! ~René / Benzai

Tap @ Van Moll. Almost black, opague. Loads of coffee, roast and raisin in the aroma. Malty sweet flavor with citric sour notes, coffee and caramel. Coffee finish. Quite decent, perhaps needs some more time.

Bottle shared with Benzai. Still quite a bit of coffee and cocoa. Jet brown with a rich light brown head. Tastes much like it smells. Decent and quite the tribute.

Bottle @ ZZT 2016-1, thanks Benzai! Black color. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, cream and a little iron. Taste of thick malt, roast, chocolate and some nice subtle oaky vanilla. Will rerate in a less drunken state. Less drunk now. Aroma of boozy vanilla, chocolate, coffee and roasted malt. Taste has sweet vanillaz red fruit, choco, coffee, creamy malt and a nice bourbony coffee finish. Good stuff, no iron to be found in this bottle. Very tasty.

Tasting at Mr Smith’s Skyflat. Thanks to Paul and Rene. Almost opaque dark brown beer, good pale tan head. Palate is light, semi dry and has good fine carbonation. The bourbon oak trips bring a mild woody sweetness and tangy bourbon soaked fruits. Light semi dry finish. Good.

Thank you for sharing Benzai! Sampled 330 ml. bottle @ “Gouda Winterbier Festival 2016”. Man, I love that label. Black, mocha head. Nose is chocolate sugar, boozy. Taste is umami, warming licorice, bread, sugar, leaves, surprisingly boozy far more so than you would expect, quite thick, faint molasses. Tried the first better batch. A bit too umami, herbal & boozy for me but not bad.

From bottle at Winterbierfestival Gouda 2016, courtesy of Benzai, thanks a lot! Dark black with a thin, frothy, slightly diminishing, tan head. Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty aroma of coffee, dark chocolate and molasses. Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty taste of dark chocolate, coffee, molasses and some oak, followed by a medium long, roasty, slightly sourish finish. Medium body, slightly oily mouthfeel, flat. Very nice!

Bottle shared at Winterbierfestival Goude by Benzai himself, thanks! Black with tan head. Thick dark chocolate, quite herbal, sweet coffee, some molasses and honey. Quite sweet with light roasted bitter finish. Almost full bodied, slick feel and fitting soft carbonation. Nice one.

Bottle shared at Leighton’s place. 7/1/2015. Many thanks to Paul / Rene for this one. Aroma is nice rounded, chocy, vanilla, creme caramel, coffee bean. Opaque black coloured pour with a lasting dark tan head. Nice coffee bean on the nose. Flavour is composed of salty, umami, choc, vanilla, light sweet coffee, little tangy dried apple. Palate is medium sweet, frothy, highly carbonation. I like it.
