Most people who know me can tell you I love statistics. So a 10K beer is nice to celebrate the milestone, but since Ratebeer allows me to also rate cider, perry, mead and sake’s this isn’t really my 10000th beer rating is it? So we’ve created a special edtition for the real 10000th beer rating, excluding the 158 other beverages I’ve rated over the years. This very limited special edition was only sold on draught at Van Moll during Benzai’s 10K release party and only 41 bottles have been made. The beer has been aged on bourbon soaked oak chips with some coffee beans added for extra coffee aroma and flavour in the background. Apart from Colin (dEnk / 8-Bit, recipe & brewing), Erwin (Van Moll, recipe & brewing) and André (dutchdrebus, label design) I’d like to thank all of you for sharing beers with me and having a good time. Cheers! ~René / Benzai

Bottle shared in London - cheers, Rene! Pours black-brown with a creamy, beige head. Lovely aroma, rich coffee, dried dark fruits, earthy cocoa. Medium sweet flavor with rich fruits, berries, grape, chocolate, scorched earth. Medium bodied with lively carbonation. Sweet finish, some gooey chocolate, dark fruits, more berries, low bitterness. Tasty beer.

Bottle thanks to Rene. It pours jet black with a thick tan head. The nose is rich roast, coffee grounds, cooking chocolate, coffee cake, bourbon, earth, toasty, tobacco and burnt toffee. The taste is bitter, roasted malt, bitter - sweet, chewy malt, some acidity, jammy berry, wood, sweet whisky, toffee and coffee beans with a rather dry, roasted finish. Medium - full body, high carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Great aroma, but the carbonation is too high on this one. Will compare to test batch when I find my notes! Good fun.

Bottle split at LKS, thanks to Bropey and Rene, 07/01/16. Black with a well appointed tan covering that retains well. Nose is rich chocolate, toffee fudge, light spice, black pepper, candied fruit. Taste comprises chocolate fudge, light buttery flavour, rich malt, coffee grinds, subtle bourbon. Medium + bodied, spritzy carbonation, semi drying close. Decent impy ... tone down the carbonation.

33 cl bottle (15/41), big thanks to René! Black color, Huge beige head at first, receding to a thing layer. Aroma’s: fruit/berries, some roast, some coffee. Retronasal more coffee, tar, light sour, light alcohol, light vanilla. Flavor is moderate sweet with a light sour note. Warming the throat. Medium bodied. Finish is mocha, roasted. I liked this a bit better than the base beer.

Pint Winterbierfestival, Gouda 2015.

330ml bottle, thanks rosenbergh, congrats Benzai!

Gusher alert! Pours pitch black with a foamy head. Aroma of roasty malts, coffee, hints of espresso, oak and chocolate. Taste is carbonated, roasty and sweetish with hints of salty licorice, cocoa, coffee, oak, chocolate and espresso. Finish is smooth, roasty and carbonated with hints of earthy coffee, burnt rubber and oak. Not that different from the regular version.
