WinterBock is a strong, dark beer that was used by eleventh century Bavarian monks to help sustain themselves during winter fasts. These creamy bocks ensured that the monks would fast frequently. Gordon Biersch WinterBock is a classic dark double bock featuring 4 different types of malt: Munich malt, pilsner malt, dark roasted caramel malt, and black malt. This is a big beer with a lot of body, and is available seasonally from November through January.

On tap at the Tysons location, pours a hazy amber with some thin, white head. Nose has grist, yeast, malt, some mild raisin. Flavor is the same, some soggy bread, yeast, a little caramel, some raisin. Watery finish.

Deep rich bronze coloured body with a thin tan head and both ruby & brown highlights - very nice looking! Aroma of caramel, toffee, malt, alcohol and some light spices. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong potent malt and sugars up front with a caramel overtone and a subtle spice at the end. Overall, a pretty good beer for the style - considering what it could have been! Nice at the airport before a flight. I sampled this pint on draught at Gordon Biersch in SFO, California on 21-March-2009.

12 oz bottle from Safeway Salinas. Nose is rich ripe bananas and caramel with a very light hint of anise. Clear cherry brown with a medium beige head. Flavor is lightly sweet caramel, bananas, and a hint of bitterness. 8/4/7/4/15 3.8 2/9/14 New batch that they ruined by overhopping and covering up all the good esters with bitter. Crappy beer now. My rating drops from 3.8 to 2.5

200th rater. 12oz bottled on 9/27/11 consumed today. Pours with a medium sized head. Color is dark brown, too dark to see through. Aroma is slightly sweet and non-sugary caramel. The munich malt is nicely present and accented by some residual sugars but definitely not too much. Earthy, dry yet sweet. Flavor has a great clean lager with munich-caramel sweetness yet low on residual sugars. Finishes nicely dry and a hint of German hops. Leaves a long dry slightly bitter aftertaste. Just a very well made doppelbock, shockingly well made.
