Inspired by the Rauch Bier’s of Bamberg, Germany, Abandon Ship Smoked Lager contains German Malted Barley smoked over Beechwood and fermented cold with lager yeast. Imagine a Märzen/Oktoberfest-style base beer with a sweet, smoky aroma and flavor. Deep amber hues and low bitterness help the non-smoked crystal malts compliment, not contrast, the smoky/savory taste of this beer.

Reddish brown pour, small head. Smoke, kind of a sour taste predominating, not really a favorite.

GABF 2014. This was decent and I respect any brewer willing to try the style. The smoke is much lighter in the flavor and aroma than I would like for my tastes, but I do not perceive any flaws.

A golden amber lager with a thin white head. In aroma, smooth biscuit malt with nice peaty notes, light mineral notes, nice. In mouth, a nice biscuit malt with fruity notes, maple, and light peated malt, nice. On tap at Aces and Ales tenaya.

Tap at Rattle’N’Hum, Manhattan - 29/05/12. Mid brown colour with a moderately sized white cap. Smoke is obvious on the nose, but subtle, backed up with a little toffee and nuts. Smoked malts in the taste, a little caramel, dark fruit. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, soft feel.

Sample at Bodega. The beer pours a clear dark brownish-amber color with a medium tan head that dissipates steadily. Short strings of lace. Aroma of smoked malts and fruit. Light to medium body with a smoky character and notes of toasted malt and ripe fruit. The finish is smoky with notes of toffee and hops left behind. Decent overall.

Smoked is restrained on the aroma. Brownish with tan head ringing glass. Medium mouthfeel with chewy sweet malt. Smoke is a nice accompaniment as opposed to overpowering like many in style. Some banana on the finish. Pleasant.

Half pint draft at Good Beer NYC. Pour is hazed brown golden with a smallish off white head. Aroma is slight sweet and mildly smoky toasted malt. Pretty faint nose, but the smoke is certainly present. Taste picks up a bit, clean malt toast sweetness up front, followed by the gentle smokiness of the nose. The fruit (apple) sweetness carries through the finish. Palate is light to medium bodied, crisp and clean finish. Quite easy drinking. Nice one.
