Bottle. Opaque black body with a frothy tan head. Aroma of pine, roasted malts, coffee. The flavor is lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, watery turning sticky texture, moderate carbonation. Lots of hop and roasted coffee bitterness, though not mouth numbing. Taste of char, coffee, licorice, ash. Light citrus, pine and tar. If you’re going to drink a dark IPA, this one has lots of depth, but there’s still that discordant note between the hops and the malts in this style that is off-putting for me.

Bottle split at Bruce’s pad, from an IP trade with Fbc24, 28/11/14. Black with a big ole tan covering that retains well. Nose is pine, charr, liqourice, spice, bitter tropicana, toffee, light cocoa notes. Taste comprises roasty tones, pine, dank hopness, bitter grapefruit. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Top draw CDA, best of this triumvirate.

Bottle share at Bruce’s pad. Thanks to CDA hound Colin. Slightly murky dark brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is airy with fine carbonation. Thin dark malts but good on flavour - mild roast, little dark chocolate and mild coffee. Big spicy hops. Mild pine and citrus. Finishes smooth with more hop spice tingle. Very fresh hop spicy CDA.

Bottle thanks to Kenny. It pours cloudy darkest brown with a decent tan head. The nose is rich roast, piney, lemonade, candied peel, sherbet, cocoa and icing sugar. The taste is rich, roasty, toast, earth, charred wood, pepper, candied orange peel, tar, burnt stuff and wood with a dry, charred finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty cheaky stuff.

Creamy mouthfeel.

Tap at Craft Heads, Tokyo. Dark opaque black color, small brownish head. Aroma of salt licorice, roast and alcohol. Medium-bodied to full-bodied. Roasted malts, citrus/piney hoppyness and licorice. Feels actually more like "standard" black ipa than 10% imperial. Nice stuff.

22oz bomber. Wow. This is one beast of a Black IPA, truly worthy of the Imperial monicker. Rich minty chocolate, coffee covered caramel and a massive resinous hop bill. I would think that this is in the 100+ IBU range...really bold hop tones. Absolutely massive beer, this is one of the best Black IPAs I’ve had.

22 ounce bottle into signature teku glass, bottled on 2/14/2014. Pours pitch black color with a 2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, papaya, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, light pine, cocoa, roasted malt, light char, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great complexity of bright citrus/tropical hops and moderate roasted malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, papaya, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, pine, cocoa, roasted malt, light char, and floral/roasted earthiness. Good amount of pine/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, papaya, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, cocoa, roast, light char, and floral/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and balance of big citrus/tropical hops and moderate roasted malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, moderately sticky, and fairly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome imperial black IPA. All around great balance and complexity of bright citrus/tropical hops and moderate roasted malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bomber with thanks to Alan. Pours deep ruby black and clear, medium tan head that laces well. Aroma is citrus, grapefruit, pine, roasted malts. Flavor follows, medium sweet, roasty with a bit of chocolate, medium bitter, citrus, pine forward. Not harsh at all. Body is a bit light, but somewhat creamy in the mouth. No hint of the 10% ABV.
