Tröegs and strong stouts go way, way back. The love affair started back in the 90’s, when our founding brothers were discovering the art and science of brewing in their backyard. Not surprisingly, one of the first five Scratch Beers we brewed at Tröegs was an imperial stout, and we’ve tinkered with the grain bill, the hops and techniques like barrel-aging ever since. Like all of the iterations, though, this one is a celebration of the roasty chocolate notes of the dark grains. Cane sugar in the boil boosts the ABV and amplifies the rich caramel character.

Draught at Meadhall, 12/17/15.
After how much I enjoyed Scratch #83, I was very excited to try what seems to be the second coming. Shows a deep, inky blackness, probably opaque, with a tan head atop that slowly fades to cover.
Huge bittersweet chocolate in the nose, with dry vanilla, light cola, burnt toffee and a heavy, almost phenolic anise-like character. Light alcohol sharpness and just a lot of dry and vinous notes piled on to one another.
Massively bitter in the mouth, with intensely drying roast, black licorice, pine resin, baker’s chocolate and sharply dry vanilla, salt and soy. Dries out the palate immediately and the lightly chewy malts are powerless to balance. Wow, what the hell happened here? I mean, I like my beer as dry as the next guy, but this is absurd. Just a bludgeoning of dry/bitter elements, with some booze thrown in too. Horribly unbalanced to the point of being undrinkable. Choked down a few ounces and had the bartender take the rest of it away.....Looks like Tec and I had the same experience. Not sure what everyone else had...

12oz bottle from Kramer, thanks Jason! Drunk on 1/28/14
Dark tan head tops a deep magenta tinged mahogany body. Transluscent around the edges. Head is initially large and creamy, receding to cover and lasting.
A huge wine-like aroma wafts out of the glass as I was pouring, making me wonder if this was wine-barrel aged....Nope, just amazingly vinous! It fades somewhat, or rather, a sweet chocolatiness catches up to it, combining to produce notes of dark fruit and espresso. Some light tobacco/ashiness and very little booziness, with a medium-high to high strength of aroma.
Flavor is right up there with the aroma. I believe this beer is about a year old and it’s in a great place right now. Hops have faded to just a juicy, lightly citric bitterness in the background, not really getting in the way of the bitter roasted barley. Maltiness provides just enough balance without sweetening the beer too much, and plentiful ashiness, vanilla, prunes and dark chocolate dance on the finish. Light carbonation, medium bodied, somewhat watery, which is good for drinkability, but not really something I’m looking for in this style.
Very much like Expedition indeed, I agree. Not quite the body/mouthfeel of that one (this is quite a bit more watery), and without the overall elegance of the best bottles of Expedition (a bit too much alcohol and burnt chocolate notes) but the fact that it’s in that wheelhouse is pretty impressive.

I didn’t know this was its own brew and not a number anymore. Sweet to those who can get this on a regular basis. Here’s the rest of my notes from Autumn of 2013 when my parents brought this up from PA.
The appearance was a nice dark brown close to black color with a decent looking one finger white to off white foamy head. Delicately laced, this one lets the its lacing slide for the most part.
The smell had a wonderful combination of light milk chocolate, dark chocolate, light coffee, super light plum, light black licorice and just a tad of roasty oakiness.
The taste took all of those flavors and just mixed them up to make such a wonderful flavoring making my taste buds go berserk.
On the palate, this one sat right at a medium- no more no less. Sessionable- slightly. Carbonation - well its there but isn’t anything overbearing.
Overall, wow, what a nice RIS more than worthy of having again.

Draft @ The Grill Next Door. Dark brown leaning on black color. Thin white head. Aroma shows chocolate, burnt coca nibs, herbal and piney hops. Flavor is just as nice. Coca nibs, molasses, premium chocolate hints and the pine hops to cut the sweetness. The 9.1 is barely noticeable. Body is full with the carbonation giving a creamy texture. As soon as the sample was gone I wanted more. Full of flavor. Well crafted.

Growler from Whole Foods Market Short Pump. Pours pitch black with a medium sized dark brown head. Good head retention. Aroma of roasted malts and bitter chocolate. The taste is big roasted malts, nuts, chocolate, booze. Medium-full bodied and fairly hot.

On tap at EBF 3/16/13. Thick, roasty chocolatey stout with a hint of plastic phenol. Not bad, but my hyper intolerance to phenols kept me from enjoying this beer.

Pony Bar, NY Hell’s Kitchen 8oz ($6): Pours a dark brown with a brown head. Aroma is a whole lot of stuff, including cake, chocolate, milk, toffee, some weird dark fruitiness, dirt, and roasted malt. Taste is quite sweet, complex and gooey. Body is pretty heavy. I didn’t see how this is an imperial stout, but it is a unique barley wine/ American Strong Ale. I enjoyed it.

Keg at The Pony Bar UES, NYC. Dark brown pour, fairly thick beige head. Lots of dark roast in here, good roast, dirt, earthy bitterness. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Rich dark cocoa finish, bittersweet, with further earth, burnt malts, touches of ash and baking cocoa. Decent balance, nice nuance.
