Beer is typically fermented in a very calculated, controlled manner with pure strains of brewers’ yeast. Our blackberry lambic beer is instead fermented by exposing it to the untamed yeasts and bacteria that are native to our Brewery. We affectionately call this unrestrained, wild amalgamation our House Funk. This blend is unique to Rivertown and this unusual, spontaneous process, involving over a year of fermentation in oak wine barrels and over 45 pounds of fresh, whole blackberries per barrel, is what gives this beer its distinctive flavor; semi-sweet, funky and vinous with a crisp, tart aftertaste that will continue to develop in the bottle for years to come.

At Rich’s Massive Cellar Emptying Tasting. Rivertown ojos negros 2012 A matte copper-Amber pour with a cork, perfumey and light blackberries. Very acidic sparkling carbonation- gassy with a heartburn inducing co2. The taste is cork, chalky, whiskey barrel caracter no berries really.

Clear pale copper orange beer, no head. Aroma: metallic, bit funky, brett notes, bit chemical. MF: soft carbon, medium to light body. Taste: funky, bitter, fruity touch, weird, soft sourness. Aftertaste: sourish, fruity, bit metallic, pretty nice finish, little bitter.

2011 bottle. Hazy berry gold with a small white head. Funky/musty, tart lactic berry, and oak aroma. Tart lactic blackberry, musty funk, and vinous oaky flavor. Medium body, lively carbonation. I could drink a lot of this. It aged beautifully.

Bottle share from Jeremy. Ruby/brown/orange pour, just a ring of head around the glass. Extremely sour aroma and taste, sharp and pungent.

Anno 2013, 75cl.

Bottle at De Garde. Pours a bright reddish color with a medium white head. A big oaky fruity nose, some berries and apple. The flavor is funky oak, sour sharp fruit, tart berries. Ripe to overripe apples. Quite nice. Not the most drinkable thing, but good. Ends with a vinous berry note.

750ml bottle shared at tasting. Grape juice filtered orange body. Nice steady, smooth sour tones. Quite nice, very tasty. Delicious, sort of exceeded my expectations in that the sour doesn’t come off unruly or infected. Delicious blackberry tones. Never overly thick, easy on the palate.

22 oz. bottle, pours a cloudy orange amber with a small white head. Aroma brings out lots of oak wine barrels, followed by blackberries, and a touch of funk. Flavour is quite complex, with lots of vinous notes, red wine vinegar, oak and finally tart blackberries. Not like an authentic lambic, but quite complex and very soft on the palate. Very nice stuff.
