Micklegate is a ruby Extra Special Bitter with a twist. The first thing that grabs you is of the strong caramel backbone, which is well balanced by plenty of hop bitterness. On the finish you’ll find hints of pine and grapefruit citrus notes from Cascade and Chinook hops. All this wrapped up in a lingering warmth from the higher ABV.

Cask at the Duke of Edinburgh, Barrow-in-Furness. Light brown, a fair bit of off-white head. Astringency is the taste, then a malty sweetness, followed by more astringency. Bitter, almost acrid aftertaste. Not balanced, but very warming and fun to drink. This goes a long way to make up for the terrible Barrow weather this morning.

Cask @ Trades Club, Hebden Bridge. Clear mid-brown colour with a creamy head. Has smooth pale malts in taste, slightly more regular in its nose but it doesn’t feel 6% given its smooth easy drinking texture.

Bottle at Chriso’s Easter tasting 2012. It pours deep amber, with a decent white head. The nose is wood, leather, herbal (particularly sage), lemon and earth. The taste is wood, leather, dryness, light spice, soap, herbal, currant and earth, with a dry, almost herbal finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Tough to drink. Doesn’t do anything for me.

Bottle at Chriso Easter Tasting 2012. Hazy amber lasting beige head. Earthy and rustic beer. Does smell of malt and twigs. Better in mouth than nose. Om malts. Bit of hop.
