This is the third in a series of the Old Stock Ale Cellar Reserves. Previous offerings were vintage 2005 and 2009, released in 2007 and 2011 respectively.

Bottled in a 500 ml bottle with a cork and wire finish, it is a memorable drink that should be enjoyed as a unique offering.

Bottle at Jackl is Backl tasting, big thanks to LKS for this top draw Barley Wine, 06/03/14. Dark mahogony brown with a moderate tan covering that soons collapses. Nose carries a big boozey waft, dark toffee fudge, sherry, tobacco, brandy snap biscuit, light cocoa, rich fruit cake mix, dates, spice, sticky toffee pudding. Taste comprises big dark fruit pangs, Xmas cake, dates, sherry tang, more brandy notes, demerara sugar, toffe apple, rich toffee fudge, boozey licks, tobacco. Full bodied, fine carbonation, sweetish close laced with dark fruit skin notes. Super solid Barley Wine, complex and graceful.

Very thick, very syrupy barley wine that I’m not sure holds up to the ordinary Old Stock. Pasty caramelized malt with some hops and plenty of booze floating around. The brandy barrel does this well. Pours brown without much head or lacing - too boozy. Finishes sweet and boozy. Tap at Churchkey, bottom of keg.

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to dmac for the trade. Pours clear, deep brown with a fine, off-white head. Rich nd dynamic aroma, lots of aged dark fruits, figs, dates, brown sugar. Big sweet flavor with rich, semi-dark malts, lots of liquified fruits, figs and dates galore, brown sugar, sugary bread. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Light warmth to finish, lots more hefty, ripe and dried fruits, sugary bread, slight oxidation, rich caramel, toffee, mild bitter leaves, rich figs. Hefty, decadent.

Bottle thanks to Leighton. It pours deep brown with a small beige head. The nose is earth, wood, must, spice, leather, brandy and aged fruits. The taste is smooth, earth, vinous, sherry, dried fruits, fig, fruit cake, earth, leather, light alcohol, hot cross bun and candy with a lingering, warming finish. Medium-full body and fine carbonation. Interesting and good depth to it. Rather nice!

2011 vintage bottle. Ruddy deep orange-red-brown, sediment-laden body, thin ring of beige carbonation. Huge oxidized brandy and salty, caramely nose with notes of butterscotch. The brandy element is strong, complementing toasty sugars, oak, and warming alcohol notes. Dry. A tad like french toast with maple syrup. Yum.

2011 Bottle thanks to Russell. Pours a cloudy brown with beige head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is strong brandy, oak, figs, and raisins. Medium mouthfeel with rich brandy, raisin, dark fruit, oak, and light boozy finish. Very impressive.

14/II/14 - 500ml bottle @ De Hopduvel (Gent) - BB: n/a - 2011 vintage (2014-193) Thanks to Bobochamp for sharing the bottle!

Little cloudy red to rusty brown beer, no head. Aroma: alcohol, lots of raisins, some apple skin, caramel, vanilla notes, bit sourish, chocolate, woody. MF: ok carbon, full body. Taste: very very oxidized, lots of alcohol, raisins, lots of sherry notes, sugary, bit sourish, woody tannins, jenever (gin), bit spicy. Aftertaste: oxidized, sherry, plum jam, prunes, raisins, some vanilla, caramel, more oxidized flavours. Did not particularly enjoy this very much. The Bourbon version was WAY more impressive!

Bottle @ Steve’s Super Bowl party. 2011 vintage. Pours a murky brown appearance with a thin head. There’s a fair amount of toffee and caramel in the nose with some grape and plum and light booze. Tons of sugar and caramel and candy in the flavor. Highly boozy. Some grape fruity notes. Ends sweet. I’m not too impressed.

Sampled on draft at Hou Thou this beer poured a dark brown color with a trace foamy white head that faded quickly and left no lacing. The aroma was very strong toffee, malt, apple and booze. The flavor was very strong toffee, caramel, apple, bread dough and applejack. Long toffee, bread dough and applejack finish. Thick and full bodied though undercarbonated. Fairly boozy but not as much as I would expect from the 15%. Interesting.
