In Falmouth,VA, the fall line of the Rappahannock River, 18th Century Fredericksburg brewers improved on the extra-hoppy India Pale Ale (IPA) brewed in Britain. The IPA was over-hopped in order to survive the long sea journey to India. American colonists used generous amounts of American grain and a modest amount of American hops and created a new beer style, the American Pale Ale (APA).

Thanks Sierra for the bottle.
This was poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a hazy burnt orange color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute. There was some light lacing speckling around the glass.
The smell had some citrus with a light tangerine. Light caramel malts here and there.
The taste was mainly sweet through the previously mentioned flavors. There was a quick dry citrus aftertaste and finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation seemed okay for the style and for me.
Overall, just an okay APA, nice to try but probably wouldn’t seek again.

Sampled on draft at the brewpub this beer poured a bright orange-amber color with a medium sized creamy tan-white head that left decent lacing. The aroma was sweet and tangy with a pineapple presence. The flavor was sweet yet tart with notes of pineapple, cracker, grapefruit, bread and a mild underlying bitterness. Medium length pineapple and grapefruit finish. Medium body. Ok.

Bottle thanks to my wife: Poured a cloudy copper color with an off white color head. Aroma is sour citrus. Taste was unexpected malts really thick with a soft sour hop not as bitter as one would think.

Hops and sweet malts in this pale. Kind of non-descript but pretty drinkable. There was something a bit off about this one though- even though it wasn’t too bad.

22 ounce bottle from Corks & Kegs in Richmond, VA. Pours a hazy reddish amber color with a half-finger head. Low retention and poor lacing. Vegetal hops in the aroma with some strangely sweet and salty flavors. Taste is bitter hops and butterscotch. Medium bodied with high carbonation. Diacetyl bomb.

Nice crisp copper coloured body with a bright orange highlight and a perfectly sized tan head. Aroma of fresh floral hops, grapefruit, honeycomb and candy sugar. Medium-bodied; Sharp pungent floral hoppiness with mild grapefruit and lemony tastes. Nice mellow finish without an overflow of hops, malt or sugar. Aftertaste shows proper hops, a good malty backbone and a perfect amount of sweetness. Overall, a good APA with nice flavours throughout. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased on 28-August-2008 from Whole Foods in Arlington (Clarendon), Virginia on 26-September-2008.
