One deceptively spring like winter day, Brewmaster Dan walked home from the brewery, sat down to dinner and said, "Boy, there are some fat squirrels out there. They're running all over the place. I think I should brew a Fat Squirrel Nut Brown Ale." Deb agreed and so another beer legend was born.

100% Wisconsin malt of six different varieties impart the natural toasted color to this bottle conditioned unfiltered ale. Clean hazelnut notes result from these carefully chosen barley malts. Hops from Slovenia, Bavaria and the Pacific Northwest give Fat Squirrel its backbone. When the going gets tough, remember to relax a moment and enjoy the "Fat Squirrel" in your neighborhood.

12oz bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a clear nut brown with a half finger off-white head. Aroma of caramel and roasty nuts. Taste is light bitter. Roasty caramel malt with a little dark chocolate. Light bodied with a thin texture. Lively carbonation and a long finish. Overall, not bad. New Glarus does better beers than this one though.

Crisp clear deep brown coloured body with a pungent ruby tint and a nice, one centimetre tall light brown head. Aroma of earth, mushrooms, dirt, malt and a bit of alcohol. Medium-bodied; Assertive nutty flavour at first with a good, pungent malt kick and a strong earthiness showing a definite earthy bite and a full-flavoured toffee finish - definitely a full-flavoured beer for the style. Aftertaste shows the nuttiness of course, a bunch of earthy malts, some alcohol warmth and a good and robust caramel flavour. Overall, I wish I could say bad things about this one, but it does simply live up to another great beer from the brewery - much more flavour than most in this style and no bitterness, no harshness and a nice robust flavour which goes well in the autumn/winter. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Festival Foods (de Pere) in Green Bay, Wisconsin on 29-July-2012 for US$1.50 sampled at home in Washington on 08-November-2012.

Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy orange with a small off white head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is caramel and hazelnuts. Medium mouthfeel with a sweet hop and light roasted malt with nice bitter finish. Easy to drink, a good brown ale from New Glarus.

Bottle. Clear, deep amber body. Frothy, off-white head. Muted aroma of roast, toasted grain, nuts. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture and lively carbonation. Taste reveals roasted malts with a hint of tart cherry. Thin flavor to go along with the thin aroma. Lacking richness from the malts. Almost like this was made so as not to offend anyone. So it doesn’t wow anyone either. A disappointment considering the brewer.

12 oz bottle. Pours slightly on the light side of amber, clear, with an off-white head. Light caramel and mineral aromas. Flavors of toasty malts, hints at caramel and cocoa. Pretty simple and straightforward, but not bad, and a decent choice for this warm winter night (similar to the one described on the bottle).

Purchased at Breeze-Thru Liquors in Milwaukee, WI; enjoyed on the first Sunday of the NFL season after watching the Bears beat the Falcons, and after running a half marathon this morning. Appearance a rather dark, slightly cloudy amber with a rich, frothy, oaty off-white head that rims around the glass. Aroma is very nutty, there are hazelnut notes in there which is great with me, along with a touch of floral hops. Taste is really great, incredibly smooth and nutty, a touch of rich sweetness with a hint of bitterness. Also a bit ’chewy’, but that can be attributable to the nuttiness. I’m happy to have tried this, very good stuff.
