Deep dark brown coloured body with a barely visible, deep dark brown head but fades to just a thin oily layer coating the top of the deep brown tinted glowing beer with only about 20 per cent opacity here. Aroma of deep caramelised sugars, toffee, earth, raisins, nuts, grain and some maple syrup noticeable with a strong bite of rustic dirtiness. Medium-bodied; Strong rich malt and earthy notes dominate with a lot of assertive nuttiness, some raisins, figs, metal and slight astringent alcohol noticeable with plentiful sweetness showing some brown sugar, treacle, maple syrup and a slight dose of coffee towards the end, but that's fairly minimal. Aftertaste is deep, slightly dry, extremely malty and showing some thinner characteristics, but that's definitely due to the longer age that I've kept this, so expected. A nice beer that definitely doesn't show anywhere close to the 12 per cent alcohol that's listed, but does show a good deal of malts and earth, but the sweetness more than makes up for it. A tad simplistic (again, expected due to the age), but the sugars and grain notes are here and some rustic earthy and nutty flavours bring everything together decently well. I'd buy another bottle of this (or any vintage) if I can find it again or head up to Connecticut. Nice to sample such an old beer that I've kept for a long time on such a special day! I sampled this 75 cL blue bottle, purchased from Stop and Save Liqours in Newtown, Connecticut on 27-November-2013 for US$9,99 sampled at my mom's house on Christmas Eve, 24-December-2020 in celebration of the day and just over seven years after purchasing this one, and 10 years anniversary of the vintage!

Bottle, 75cl. A black beer topped by a dense light tan head. The aroma is lightly oxidized, with caramel, dark chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Some prunes too. There’s cocoa, dark coffee, roasted malts, some dried fruits and a touch of alcohol in the mouth. It’s full-bodied, smooth, warming and soft on the palate, with a good bitterness. Lasting roasted, warming nad decentlyh bitter finish. Noth much of a Black IPA this one, at least not anymore, but it’s tasteful 150616

Bottle at Sander’s place in NYC during an evening of prodigous drinking. Also, thanks to Sander for cracking open this doozy. Pours dark brown with a faint foam head. Nose holds tangy charcoal. Flavor is medium to big sweet with some dark fruits, moderate roast, coal, tangy grapes and light licorice. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Moderate warmth at the end, with dark sugars and tangy dark fruits, along with background roast and a bit of tar. It’s a very interesting beer, if a bit messy overall.

A deep dark IPA with a thin moka head. In aroma, a pungeant floral hops over soy sauce, a bit of sweat. In mouth, an uber-hoppy sweet chocolate malt with salty iodine, loads of alcohol, interesting. On tap at Boston Beer Summit, Jan. 15 2011.

750ml bottle pours a watery, opaque black with a thin, white head. Nose is sweet, perfume, oats. Flavor is brown sugar, sweet, light vanilla, weird hop pellet flavor too. Finish is sweet, a little weird.
