Bold, spicy, menacingly delicious HopDevil takes on an entirely new dimension when subjected to a wild yeast fermentation. A sharp, sourish edge has been added by this fermentations that plays into the caramel sweet malt deliciously and creates complex interplay with citrus accented hops.

Originally made in 2008 and re-brewed throughout the years.

Sample at the HSC Sour Beer Tasting on 06/19/2010: Pours a clear bright orange color with a thick and fluffy off-white head that dissipates steadily. Patchy lacing on the glass. Funky brett aroma with some fruity and malty notes. Medium body with a moderately sour character offset by caramel malt sweetness. Some spice flavors as well. The finish is vinous and not overly sour with a spicy aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

750 ml bottle at Birreria Paradiso, shared with everyone within sight (but we still couldn’t finish the bottle). Clear copper color, large off white head. Aroma is barely present. Taste has plenty of malt, some bread dough, and a bit of funk in the finish. Lacks character and complexity. Would not try this again.

Tastes a lot like a Hop Devil with a well-melded, reasonably mild brett flavor, which tones down the sharp edges of the base beer. The beer pours a cloudy/hazy amber color with a good head and lacing. The aroma is American hops and smoothed out Brett funk. The flavor is a unique, to me anyway, combination of Brett funk and American IPA. Any harsh bitterness from the hops has been replaced or, at least, toned down by Brett mustiness. It’s a good beer but not what I was expecting.

Tap @ Boston/NY 2009. Slight hazy orange color, short head. Quite hoppy aroma. Slight bitter taste. Didn’t really notice the sour and sharp edge on this one. Maybe that’s why it’s only called a belgian ale instead of a sour ale?

Bottled at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Lightly hazy red, lively head. Bretty nose with sweat, hay and orange. Medium bodied with well rounded spritzy mouthfeel. Floral and grassy, Orvallish with complexity and drinkability. Growing piney bitterness. Great beer!

Pour is a dark amber with a large white head. Aroma is earthy malts with some funk and caramel. Flavor is bitter hops with sweet bready malts. Some apple flavor is left on the tounge after the swallow. The funk is there but not as much as i was hoping. Still this is a tasty Americanized Belgian.

bottle - Pours amber orange with a huge, fluffy, lingering head. The aroma is of citrus hops and brett. The brett works well with the ample citrus and earth accents in the hop heavy flavor. It’s definitely there but it doesn’t dominate the other flavors. Creative and tasty.

Nice crisp copper coloured body with orange and amber highlights, a thick white head and a bunch of bubbles. Aroma of yeast, hops, apples and a touch of hay - nice. Medium-bodied; Assertive bitter taste with a lot of hops, some grass and hay flavours and a good yeast finish. Aftertaste is dry and bitter - a lot of hops, a touch of yeast and some good oaky and alcohol finish. Overall, a nice and refreshing beer that is fairly different than any other that i’ve had - a good beer to try! I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Party Beverage in Newburgh, New York on 02-April-2010, sampled a day later here in Upstate New York.

Bottle: Poured a lightly dirty beige color ale with some golden hue and a huge off-white foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of Belgian malt with some dry Brett notes and a floral and bitter hoppy finish. Taste of lightly sweet Belgian malt with some clear dry Brett notes with some floral and dry hops finish. Body is quite full with limited filtration and great carbonation with no signs of alcohol. Very well done and interesting take on the style.
