Bottle at the Funky 6. Pours cloudy amber with an off-white head. Aroma holds citrus, spices, malts and some Belgian funk. Interesting flavor, lightly sweet with some tartness of funk and brett, some fruitiness. Medium in body with good carbonation. Finishes dry, quite musty, with some citric bitterness and understated malt sweetness. Good brew.

Sampled at DC Epic Sour Tasting 2010. Pours a super carbonated, hazy orange amber with a very frothy, active white head. Aroma is bretty, malty, light citrus, hay, grains, yeasty. Flavor is tart, sweet, a little candy sugar, yeasty, bready. Heavy mouthfeel but otherwise dry. A total Orval ripoff. Nice though...

750 ml bottle at DC Epic Sour Tasting 2010, courtesy of ryan, thanks! Hazy orange, off white head. Aroma of sour orange peel, clove. Taste is similar, with a bit of grapefruit. Nice body. Tasty.

Throwdown. Fruity raisin and vanilla and a little floral. Nicely funky too. Dry and a little tart. Fizzy. A little spicy pepper in the finish.

Bottle shared by awaisenen at Dr. Bill’s get-together on 3/22/07.
At the risk of sounding controversial (which I’m not trying to, as I love heavyweight and brett beers), I was rather unimpressed by this. Foamy, rocky and large white head right away signals the huge carbonation. And it really shows in the flavor, even after some breathing. Just too much of it, breaking up the smooth malt consistency. One of the best things about Orval is its nearly creamy texture and fantastic bottle-conditioning. Other than that, this one starts out lopsidedly sweet and very fruity, but some heavy paperiness/graininess seems to assert iteslf quickly, really making it difficult to focus on the brett. I kept getting cherries and light caramel, with a very unrefined wild yeast character and very juicy, but not very fresh golding hop notes. Just seems muddled to me.
The aroma was markedly better, the brett doing a better job of concentrating itself and producing a very botanical, mildly fruity and somewhat tart nose. Decent strength, and no flaws, no alcohol. Really a shame about the flabby mouthfeel and muddled flavors. That’s how it seemed to me, anyways. I’m sure I’ll try it again and rerate it.

Sampled during RBSG 2006. Cloudy medium orange with a three dimensional head of off-white. Funky sweet aroma with some tartness. Somewhat tart flavor that is balanced somewhat by a bit of underlying sweetness. Light palate.

Bottle. Pours with a small head that lasts. Lots of bubbles shooting all around the beer. Color is amazing - thick reddish-orange with glowing edges. Can only make out shapes through it. Aroma is very present. There is definitly a sour aspect to it maybe more like a sweet tartness, cherry like. There is a huge creaminess to it. Some slight hop bitterness as well. Taste is similarly complex and balanced. Again that very present creaminess, tangerine flavor as well. Pretty much imagine a lactose fruit flavor.
7/13/06. Had it on tap at D.B.A last night. It was more abrasive on tap (even though for my friend it was very smooth). Lots of bitterness jumped out at me that got in the way of those great complex flavors I noted in the bottle. Also, didn’t have that creaminess present in the bottle.
2/25/07. This is still full of life, strong carbonation. The aroma has a brett character but not a fruity aspect like the original bottle. This seems to be a sign of brett with age. The creaminess and "tangerine" flavor are no longer present as well. However, there is a bit more of a light Belgian sweetness coming through.
