Very dark maroon color with a scant tan head and no significant lacing. Lots of malt flavor, but also lots of hops - unusual to find both so prominently displayed in a winter ale. Light spice, probably cinnamon. Very drinkable.

12 ounce bottle from Vintage Cellar in Blacksburg, VA. Pours a dark, clear ruby tinted brown. Medium head with good head retention and excellent lacing. Aroma of toasted malts, caramel, dark fruits and something a bit cheesy and off. Taste is dark toasted malts, light dark fruits, harsh bitter hops. Medium bodied.

Bottle: Poured a dark brown with a tan color head. Aroma is sticky roasted malt that clings to the nose. Taste is strange its starts off roasted malt, but quickly burns of hops. Finish is a metallic chalky malt.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a mahogany color with a very large dark tan head. The aroma was sweet, malty, lightly roasty and had undertones of chocolate and caramel. The flavor was bitter, malty and dry with touches of chocolate and coffee and a light nutty undertone. Subtly throughout were notes of tobacco and somewhat harsh hops. The finish was long, dry and malty. The mouthfeel was fairly thick. Complex and rather nice.

Bottle. Pours a deep chestnut brown with a finger of creamy beige head. Nose is rather malty, a bit of caramel, and lightly hopped. Taste is rather mild of maltiness with a little roast and light floral hops. A decent amount of lingering bitters in the tail. Overall this one is worth taking home, but not keeping around.

Dark brown with a sizeable rocky light brown head. Chocolatey aroma, somewhat earthy nose with foresty hop accents. Chocolatey flavour with light earthiness. Thinnier, less interesting on the palate than on the nose.

Pours dark copper with tan head. Aroma is malty with light hoppy/spicy nose in the background. Taste, malty and fruity (cherry), with some spices and sugar. Aftertaste of light bitter hops with light malts, leaving a tingly feel on palate. Dark fruits are present but attenuated by the bitter hop finish.

Sample at the holiday beer tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 11/13/08. This beer pours dark brown-amber with a medium thin beige head that retreats steadily. Dark malt, grain and caramel aroma. Medium body with flavors of malt and caramel primarily, with bits of dark fruit and hops in the background. The finish is malty and fruity with a short sweet aftertaste. Thoroughly average overall.

12oz bottle consumed at New World in Tampa. Pours clear amber with lasting tan head and some sheet lacing. Mild aroma with a rich roastiness as well as a bit of sweet dark fruitiness. It has a rich inviting flavor with roasty malts mixed with pine hop bitterness. The malts seem to dominate but the hops can’t be dismissed either. Toward the finish a brief dark fruitiness surfaces and mixes with mild caramel candy sweetness to add to the persistent roasty maltiness. Tastes better than I was expecting.

Hey another decent Spanish Peaks beer, kodos to... Flying Dog? Pours a very dark reddish brown with a tiny head that quickly disappears into nothing. Hop centered beer with a clean malt center. Nothing too over the top here lightly sweet hops and kind of a generic maltiness, faintly earthy. Nothing off-putting, which is a big step up for Spanish Peaks. Light bitterness at the end and a shapr finish to the flavor. Probably a good example of a standard micro.
