Extra Hoppy Brown Ale
Collaborators: Richard Norgrove Jr., Brewmaster, Bear Republic Brewing Co. / Matt Cole, Brewmaster, Fat Head's Brewery / Mitch Steele, Brewmaster, Stone Brewing Co.
Nothing says Christmas like hanging out with good friends and brewing up something special. Thanks to Matt Cole from Fat Head's and Richard (Ricardo) Norgrove from Bear Republic for braving pre-holiday travel to come to Stone the week before the Christmas holiday and brew this “sort of” old-school American (or Texas) brown ale. The recipe we came up with has a host of specialty malts, molasses, brown sugar, Columbus, Bravo, Brewer's Gold and, for the first time ever at Stone, Cascade hops! We’re hoping our brew brings back fond memories of some of the earliest classic craft brews. Enjoy your trip down memory lane!
A throwback to the early days of craft brewing with some interesting twists along the way. It has that classic Brewer's Gold/Cascade hop presence, with combinations of herbs, pine and citrus.

12 oz bottle from Mega Liquor 8, Alhambra, CA. Deep dark brown color. Big head, beige, long lasting, good lacing. Aroma’s: resinous hops, some caramel, molasses (reminiscent of rootbeer). Also a bit herbal/spicy retronasal. Flavor is medium bitter, with some roasted sweetness. Medium bodied. Finishes somewhat roasted and long lasting bitter. I’m usually not a big fan of browns but this was really nice.

Bottle: Poured a brown with reddish tint to the edges, the head was frothy and beige. Aroma was nice cascade hops and subtle malts. Nice blend of malts, hints of chocolate and fresh hops that linger through the finish.

I found this in a store on my way back from Boston today. Pours a solid dark brown with a smallish off white head that slowly dissipates but never leaves. Earthy spicy piney hops on top of a hint of bready chocolatey malt sums up the aroma quite well. The flavor is sharp resinous bitter with a bit of mineral water and a hint of bread chocolate and caramel. Medium to thin body with a moderate level of carbonation and a resinous chalky mouthfeel. This is probably a bit less than fresh as the hops seems to be muted and not bright. Decent enough beer, but I’ll bet it was much better fresh.

12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market Charlottesville. Pours a hazy amber color with a large foamy off-white head. Good head retention. Aroma of spicy hops, herbal notes, clay and a bit of chocolate. The taste is herbal hops, clay, chocolate, tart notes, brown sugar. Medium bodied, creamy, lingering bitterness. Not that old and kept cold but still didn’t age well. Or maybe it did, which would be even more troubling.

Bottle. Pours clear reddish amber with a large tan head that slowly dissipates with some lacing. Aroma is hoppy, pine and citrus, with a roasted malt caramel back. Flavor is caramel, roasted malt, pine, citrus, a touch of mollasses, but only mildly sweet given all that. Medium bitter finish. Nice, but more malt presence than I like in my IPA’s. :)

Super hazy brown coloured body with a muddy ruby and copper glow and a thick, three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of bright resiny hops with a lot of alcohol and malt - very nice nose. Medium-bodied; Strong hoppy flavour at first with an earthy, nutty bite and a good caramel and toffee sweetness that shows a very nice ending. Aftertaste borders more on a brown ale or a light herb/spice more than anything else, but a nice hoppy kick at the very end, but the alcohol is present, along with the toffee/caramel. Overall, a nice beer - not amazing, but a good flavour with some good complexity at the end. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Olive Tree Market Place in San Diego, California on 05-May-2012 for US$2.99 sampled at home in Washington on 31-July-2012.

35,5 cl bottle @ hotel room, Mammoth Lakes
Aroma feels like a root beer with some nuts and roasted notes. Flavour is hoppy and sweet with some roasted notes, and root beer. A weird one, but not bad.
