Zwarte Zjef has its origin in the birth of Zjef. ‘t Paenhuys brewed 3 different beers. The Witte (white) Zjef, the Bruine (brown) Zjef en the Zwarte (black) Zjef. The happy parents elected Zwarte Zjef and our stout was born.

Bottle, I forget from where. No readable MHD. Super dark brown, not black, hazy raisin color with small, fast dispersing head. Looks more like a Belgian strong dark. Almost no noticeable aroma, hint of malt, that's weird. Flavor is caramel slight-butterscotch sweetness, little depth, little complexity or aftertaste. A bit nutty like those sugar-roasted pecans at Christmas, but not as interesting. A bit disappointing for a nine percent supposedly-stout honestly.

Black beer, thin head. Malty, liquorice aroma. Flavour has a good hit of liquorice too which isn't to my taste. Some coffee and lactose in there with some nuts too. Not my cup of tea and not as rich as I'd like but it's by no means bad, just not really my thing.

hazy brown colour, medium sized creamy beige-ish-yellowish head; aroma of herbal, licorice, anise, dried plum, some dark chocolate and roasted nutty notes; taste is basically the same with some Sweet coffee; well, not really an Imperial stout…but otherwise, it's quite good

Opaque amber brown colour, small frothy off-white head, mostly diminishing. Aroma roasted malt, caramel, dark fruit, brown sugar, Haagse hopjes. Taste light heavy sweet and medium bitter, malty, toffee, fruity, liquorice, coffee, coffee candy, spicy notes. Toasted sweetbitter aftertaste, caramel, coffee, chocolate, medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, very good.

Ok+

29 April 2018, at Zythos Bierfestival. Deputy Taster: Anke.
Hazy brown with a lasting, small, foamy, off-white head - already weird for an 'Imperial Stout'. Aroma of dark fruits, light roasted malt, cigar ash, burnt caramel, bready malt, (cookie) dough. It tastes medium to heavy dough-like sweet with hints of dark fruits and caramel, and light roasted & spicy bitter. Shortish, malty, caramelly finish with some herbal hops and warming whisky or liqueur alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Tasted right next to the Imperial Kroezer (by Hopscheppers), and both lack the necessary qualities to be named an Imperial Stout. They might only be a Belgian Quad with 'stoutish' accents, but I can't say that they weren't enjoyable.

Bottle @ home. Brown to red-brown color with a red glare coming through. Average sized beige to light brown head that lasts for a short while. Aroma is malts, caramel, dark sugar, a hint of laurel. Taste malts, again a hint of laurel, liquorice, slightly sweet and a hint of spice, again caramel and perhaps a hint of toffee with just the slightest touch of malt bitter in the finish. Weird imperial stout, if it really is one. Seems like an alias of Winter Zjef to me, but I’ll go with whatever the admins decide on this.

33cl bottle shared with Kermis. Medium creamy off white head. Very hazy deep amber pour. Not an imperial stout, more of a strong dubbel
