Pours very dark for a red ale, i'd call this a brown ale by color. Smooth, creamy and very stable, slightly off-white head. Scent is mild, some crisp milder roast (caramel) from the malts come up, somewhat green aspects from the hops as well (beneath the maltyness). Taste is certainly more roasty than I expected from a red ale. Crisp roast, caramel, brown bread, toasted bread. Very nice balanced bitter side to it, certainly more than the average red ale, but not Typical alchemist hopbomb (of course, this isn't the style to do so). Lovely, easy going beer, but perhaps simply not special enough to trade for again.

Pours a deep russet from a can, off-white head lingers and there's a fair amount of lacing. Aroma is...nothing? Like pass it around and people are shrugging. Not bad at least. Flavor is pleasantly bitter, astringent, good balance. Good beer.

Head gone in seconds, cola to chocolate brown beer, low carbonation. Sweet, brown candi sugar, fruit, tobacco, brown bread, black cardamome, chocospread. Bitter - from the above only the black cardamome remaining in the taste; dark green leaves, felt. Feels medium to better bodied, and indeed not very carbonated. No long aftertaste. Taste is decent, but the nose doesn't do it right.

Can thanks to William. Pours a dark amber with medium beige head that lasts. The aroma is earth, licorice, toffee. Medium body, dark fruit, caramel, lingering bitterness, good.

From can. Thanks George! Clear dark amber copper color with off white to light beige head. Malty and hoppy aroma, caramel, bread, pine, grass. Sweet and bitter taste like aroma. Medium oily body with soft carbonation. 8-3-8-3-16

Poured from a 16 oz can. Aroma is malty with some dark caramel, toasted bread, nuts and hints of chocolate. Moderate hop notes with some grapefruit and pine resin. Light alcohol spice. Pours brown with a bit of an amber hue with a large, thick, creamy, tan head that shows solid retention as it slowly recedes. Moderately high lacing and small legs. Flavor is moderately sweet with moderately strong malt flavors. Lots of dark caramel and toasted bread. Lighter chocolate and nut notes. Moderately strong bitterness with light alcohol spice. Medium light grapefruit, pine resin and resin notes. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a decent Red Ale, but not a style I like. The hops never seem to work well with the malt and instead its just a bitter, malty beer.

on tap-pours a rich tan head with trailing lace and copper/red color. Aroma is medium malt-roasty, pine bite. Taste is resin/pine/citrus-lemon hops, medium malt-roasty/some caramel/peat. OK carbonation.

On tap at the brewpub. Poured a cloudy amber with a gray head that dissipated slowly to the edges and laced. Aroma was quite earthy with some grassy hops with a backing hay and grain note. Flavor was similar with earthy hops and grains with a bit of sweetness in the finish.

Draught tulip at the brewpub on 3/10/06
Deep cherry-red color, with some light gold and tan tints, glassy clarity, is obviously unfiltered, but well-settled. Frothy, prominent, chalky-beige colored head is very well-retained providing light lacing.
Smells of a mix of light chocolate matls, touches of sticky caramel and just a hint of crystal malts for color. Not overly dried out or papery from the crystal malt addition, which is a feat in itself. A touch of creamy-sweet pale malt sugars, dry, but lively fruits (apples, cherries, raisins, plums) and a straightforward, but delightfully playful and aromatic hop profile of soft citrus, light soil and bits of wintergreen and controlled pine. The flavor is full of fruity and sprucey hops, at first, with a grainy, unfiltered texture, sticky caramel, near-creamy pale or dextrin malts and tastefully done, lightly drying crystal malts. Some bits of chocolate on the very tail end, with a very tight, low amount of carbonation. Perhaps it dries out a bit too much, with a growing toastiness as it warms, and the hops are only moderately assertive (yet fully flavorful). No alcohol noted in nose or flavor. Brewers that can make crystally/caramelly, PNW hopped, 8% abv double-red ales taste lively, round and balanced are a rare breed.
