The 2014 Double DBA imperial special bitter is Firestone Walker’s flagship DBA brewed at double strength, using twice the amount of malts and hops. As with the regular DBA, the 2014 Double DBA was partially fermented in a union of new American oak barrels. After fermentation, the beer was racked and returned to the union barrels as well as bourbon barrels, where it aged for one year. The barrel mix for the 2014 Double DBA included vessels from Woodford Reserve, Elijah Craig and Four Roses.

From a 0.65l bottle @ Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2013. This is a cloudy dark plum red one with a small islandy and sidesticking beige top. Not to extreme on the nose but I get a nice gentle sweetness, it's light fruity, some alcohol is cutting through and there are hints of concentrated dried fruits. Grows better and better after a while and some temperature. More alcohol in the taste also, but the surprising thing here is all that fantastic vanilla! Loads and of it! Strange as I did not notice that at all in the aroma. Slightly woody and sharp, stingy hedge like hops. Good sticky flavors all the way. 04.05.2013

Bottled. 2011. Nose of oak, vanilla, oranges, toffee, restrained bourbon. Milky vanilla yogurt flavor, toffee, sweet but balances. Tobacco. Well, just a bit too sweet but good.

[Courtesy of and thanks to Kraddel][650 ml. bottle][Consumed close to half] Gorgeous packaging. Pours a dark pomegranate copper amber that just screams barleywine. Almost clear beer with only bubbles for a head, beige bubbles. Smells heavily of sherry, good side of oxidation, oily pine nuts and walnuts, thick caramel, lots and lots of sherry with brown sugar sweetness. Taste is slightly metallic upfront followed by sherry, brown sugar and caramel sweet but nowhere near as sweet as quite a few beers of these style tend to be – which is how I prefer them honestly – & good oxidation reigns supreme here, lots of oily nuts, one again pine nut oil, dried old berries, faint dates, warming and mildly boozy. Not as thick as I had hopped and this feels a bit thinned out. Honestly, I had very high hopes for this one coming down from Abacus and Sucaba and it is not like it is the most common of beer here or anything but this was nowhere near as rich and decadent as I prefer my barleywines. This felt more tame than balanced with a kind of thinness and almost metallic character to it. Not bad but a definite downer for me.

Shared bottle at the Grand Tasting at the RBNG-event at Fredrik 3.’s Hall. Tiny beige head to a near-clear amber coloured body. Sweet aroma, hints of vanilla and caramel. Oak vanilla flavours, hints of liquorice, dried fruits and honey. Bittersweet tail. Full bodied. Pleasant, a bit too sweet though. (Fredriksten festning, Halden 15.02.2014).

Amber color with a tan head. Sweet fruity aroma. Slightly sweet and “big” body. Malty, sweet fruity and some spices in the flavor. To sweet for me.

From a shared bottle at RBNG-14. Pours deep amber with an off-white head. Strange, sweet aroma of caramel, spices and vanilla. To sweet and not quite my style but certainly decent.

On tap at Harry’s Hofbrau for SF Beer Week. Rich, full, biscuity aroma. Clear copper with a slight white head - beautiful. Taste is viscous, slick and full bodied with malt, deep fruit and alcohol.
