Autumn has often been associated with melancholy. The possibilities of summer are gone and the chill of winter is on the horizon. Keats was more optimistic in the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. We think likewise, although it may be wise to spend more time under cover with this comforting and rewarding red ale and remember after the gold of summer, comes the red of autumn.

Cask pint in Kay’s Bar, Edinburgh on 26th Oct 2014. Poured an nice autumnal red-amber with a full white head that gave off some heavy lacing. The nose is semi-sweet caramel with berrys. The taste is leaning towards a bitter sweetness again with malty caramel and winter berries showing. Decent, but lacked depth of flavour and body feel.

Cask at The Oval Tavern, Croydon. It pours red-amber with a decent white head. The nose is sweet, caramel, wood, dried fruits and candy. The taste is smooth, bitter-sweet, toasty, caramel, dried fruits, icing sugar, leathery and berry with a sweet sort of finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Has a somewhat artificial character about it. Typical Caley stuff. Very so-so.

Cask at the haymarket. Pours clear red-amber, thin off-white head. Light nutty aroma, some red fruit, bit chalky. Taste has more mineral notes, light fruit. Thin and forgettable.

Cask at Top Joes, Thurso - the most northerly beer I’ve had in the UK ! 20/10/13. Clear reddish amber with a moderate off white head. Nose is bready malts, hint of Burton snatch, light fruit. Taste comprises dull fruit notes, bready malt, bread doough, paper, light toffee. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, light bitterness in the finish. Mediocre.

Cask @ Diggers, Edinburgh [251013]
Amber, clear, dense white head
Aroma - Slight fruity, no caley aroma here (!), but still dull
Taste - Caramel malts, soft fruits, the caley malts are back again, some soft bitter fruit,
Palate - Medium body, bit oily, bitter finish, getting a bit of a metallic linger
Overall - Another below average beer from Caledonian

Cask handpull at Orange Tree Canterbury. Clear pale brown lasting near white head. An ok slightly creamy bitter. Not much hop. Is this a Scottish Ale? Slightly farty yeast on aroma. Good condition though. Some hop sting on the finish. Turned out vaguely ok.
