Padrino is an imperial stout with a whole family of good added. Amaretto, coffee, vanilla and lactose are connected with a huge dark imperial stout. The result is an indulgent beery version of the popular Italian dessert ’Affogato’, which literally means ’drowned’ as the vanilla ice cream is doused with coffee and amaretto. As imperial stouts go, Padrino is kingpin!

Bottled (as Summer Wine Padrino Imperial Affogato Stout). Black colour, mediumsized foamy brown head, which leaves some lace. Aroma is vanilla, some coffee, lactose, amaretto and mild nutty tones with some toffee. Flavour is pretty much following the pattern of the aroma, but also has a slight dried fruity and some slight alcohol sweetness to it.

Bottle at home in London - sourced from Kris Wines, I believe. Soloing an impy stout on a Sunday evening. Pours oily, deep black with a fluffy tan head that relaxes down expeditiously. There’s a fair bit of sugary chocolate in the aroma, moderate roast, burnt grains. Big sweet flavor with sugary, gooey milk chocolate, very mild bitterness, some dark berries, raisins, accents of caramel and burnt marshmallows. Full bodied, a little chewy, with fine carbonation. Sticky-sweet on the finish, lightly warming, with somewhat syrupy dark malt character, lots more simple chocolate, hints of vanilla. I think this beer is two years old, and you can detect some very slight oxidation on the margins. The beer is perhaps a bit unbalanced to the sweet side, but in small doses it is enjoyable stuff.

Bottle at home in garden, 6th April 15. Aroma slightly metallic, coffee, booze. Taste is coffee, sweet lactose, maybe vanilla, no amaretto. Palate is thin for the style, one dimensional, not Great, but ok to swig

330ml bottle. Black colour, beige foam head and aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee. Taste is roasted malty, smoke, dark fruits, some hop, with coffee & chocolate notes and earthy bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry earthy bitter finish. Nicely drinkable.

Bottle, Londis, Penny Lane, Liverpool. Deep dark brown pour with a thin tan head. Sweetish nose of coffee and chocolate. Similar traits unfolded flavour-wise alongside some dark malts and fruits. Low carbonation. ABV pretty well smothered. Decent enough but nothing stellar.

24th Aug 2014, shared bottle at the Midlands Meet. Poured dark brown with a tan coloured head. Bitter coffee grains and dark chocolate aroma. Taste is all about the dark malts, with the flavours very similar to those picked up by the nose (chocolate and bitter coffee). Alcohol well hidden within the brew, I liked it.
