Imperial stout laced with amaretto, coffee and vanilla. Shady dark malts. English hops. Loaded with sin.

Padrino is an imperial stout with a whole family of good added. Amaretto, coffee, vanilla and lactose are connected with a huge dark imperial stout. The result is an indulgent beery version of the popular Italian dessert ’Affogato’, which literally means ’drowned’ as the vanilla ice cream is doused with coffee and amaretto. As imperial stouts go, Padrino is kingpin!

Keg at Casc, Aberdeen, 20/06/14. Black with a moderate tan covering that retains well. Nose is big coffee grinds, dark chocolate, roasted malt, mineral pangs, earthy vibes. Taste comprises big espresso, mineral tones, coffee cake, rich chocolate fudge, molasses, roasty tones. Medium + body, fine carbonation, sweet licks and a boozey jacket in the close. Nice coffee driven impy, easy drinker, ABV well masked.

Tap at Friends of Ham, Leeds. This is like one of those early morning espressos that you see the locals drinking, in a hurry, when in a bar or cafe in Italy. Thick, sweet, roasty, and I think I’m just going to nip out and run a quick half marathon...

Opaque dark brown beer, few tan bubbles for a head. Palate is smooth and dry with just modest carbonation. Smooth dry dark malts. little coffee. Sweet amaretto, touch artificial but nowt serious. Tangy fruits underneath. Dry finish. Not bad.

(Draught at BrewDog Stockholm, 28 May 2014) Black colour with dense, pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose with lots of coffee, notes of dark chocolate, cacao and a touch of tar. Malty, roasted, slightly fruity taste with dark chocolate, coffee, blueberries, a smooth milky cocoa character, vanilla and a slightly sweet finish with a generous coffee bitterness. Almost full body, with a certain sweetness. Fresh and tasty with lots of coffee, chocolate and blueberries. Very nice.

330ml bottle from Cornelius. Pours dark brown, no real head. Aromas of vanilla, roasted coffee, light smoke and toffee. Taste is more of the same, and though it hangs together quite well, something is missing. Lack of carbonation doesn’t help either.

Bottle. It pours darkest brown with limited head. The nose is sweet coffee, amaretti biscuits, condensed milk, toast, toffee and Scottish tablet. The taste is rich, roasty, bitter-sweet, big sweet coffee hit, toast, mild acidity, milk chocolate, caramel, amaretti biscuits with a dry, toasty finish. Medium-full body and sadly very low carbonation. I like the combination of flavours, but sadly the beer is let down a bit by lack of carbonation. Pretty drinkable stuff nonetheless...
