This unusual black beer, brewed exclusivey for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival, uses huge amounts of wheat malt, as well as roast barley, to create a biscuity
smoothness, balanced by a generous hopping, leading to a dry, smooth and refreshing character.
Hops used: Endeavour, Pilgrim

On cask at the Standing Order. Appearance - close to opaque black but with some red chinks. Nose - toffee with a light shortbread note lurking. Taste - massive toffee with chocolate following it through. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a rich finish that is perhaps a little too sweet. Overall - not sure I got any Wit style in there or was that a higher form of Wit.

Cask at the Hope Tap, Reading. Brown-black with a frothy light brown head. Smooth mouthfeel with a hint of fizz. Some sweetness up front with a definite creamy cappuccino flavour. Roasted malt behind. OK.

Cask handpull Crosse Keys London. Black beer with dark ruby edges lasting tan head. Roasty almost smoked flavour. Lightly smoked sausage. Certainly the most interesting beer of the festival so far. Smoky bacom crisps. Good condition. Would have again. Lovely.

Cask at Archie’s. It pours near black with a small tan head. The nose is toasty, earth, salted liquorice, spice and banana bread. The taste is bitter, toasty, roasty malt, spice, umami, liquorice, dark fruits and charred stuff with a very dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Too dry and savoury for me. A touch of sweetness would round this off a bit. OK at best.

Cask at The Greyhound (JDW), Maidenhead. An attractive glossy pitch black colour with a tight tan head; aroma of burnt caramel; smooth grainy body, with caramel and well done toast flavours; and some herbal hops giving a dry biscuity finish. Moreish and satisfy and rather good.
