Brian Stewart has travelled to Batemans Brewery, in Lincolnshire, to brew this beer especially for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival. This hoppy beer is a light caramel colour, with marmalade-orange on the nose, a toffee character with hints of spice and plenty of tangy hop notes, leading to a gentle, yet crisp, bitterness. Hops used: Admiral, Challenger.

Cask at the foot of the walk. Pours clear amber, nose is floral, perfume, toffee, taste is dry, sweet, floral.

Cask at the foot of the walk.... Copper.. Thin tan lacing... Soft sweet fruits... Soft floral fruit nose soft sweet juicy fruits oily fruits... Nothing exciting but nicely drinkable

Cask handpull Samuel Peto jdw Folkestone. Clear amber colour lasting cream head. Thoroughly drinkable pale ale. Some malt some hop. Not hugely interesting but drinkable enough. Warms the cockles and slakes the thirst. Bit of caramel bit of grassy hop sting. Ok to over carbonation.

Cask at the White Lady. Pours clear pale gold, thick white head. Aromas are light floral, light malt. Taste is a bit astringent. Thin body, bitter finish.

Cask at the Bankers Draft, Bedford. Dark gold/orange, with a loose white head. Butterscotch and astringent smell. Taste is quite sulphurous with a caramel/biscuity sweetness. Like the Pillsbury Dough Boy guffed down my throat, which is simultaneously as pleasant and as horrible as it sounds. To misquote Voltaire: ’I do not agree with what you brew, but I will defend to the death your right to brew it.’ I am grateful for the opportunity to try beers such as these. Would I have it again? No.

Cask at the moon under water Watford jdw. Clear golden coloured pour with a lasting white cap. Aroma is subdued, sharp apple, sweet malts. Flavour is composed of sweet nutty grains, sharp apple, cleaning product, light caramel, some solvent. Palate is medium light bodied, semi sweet, lowish carbonation. Some obvious flaws.

Cask at the Monks’ Retreat (JDW), Reading. Bright amber with a ring of white head; indistict orangey aroma; very dry to start, then some toffee and orange flavours; and a crisp, dry finish. Rather unexciting.

Third of a pint in my local Wetherspoons on 13th March 2015. Golden pour with a wispy head. Definate orange/marmalade aroma as the tasting notes claim, some semi-sweet malty molasses in the taste although the finish was dry and leaning towards bitterness. Does not hide the alcohol too well but overall a very drinkable beer and one I would gladly have had more of, if I wasn’t required to host a bloody ’Cheese and Wine’ evening at home for the wife tonight!
