Belinda and Heather enjoying Broadside Ice Cream on Southwold beach[/caption] We first met Jan Matysiak (Brewmaster) and Heather McReynolds (Brewer) at The Crown in Southwold. After a quick catch-up it was time to head for the beach for a paddle and some Broadside ice cream - it's what every brewer does at 10.30am on a Tuesday morning, yes? I might add that Heather and Jan had already been shown around the brewery by Fergus the evening before. After we had dusted off the sand, we headed for the brewhouse and ran through the final checks on the recipe. Mostly, it was all okay apart from a few adjustments by Jan to add some of the hops as late on as possible in the kettle to hold onto that lovely fruity aroma that Bengali Tiger has. With our state-of-the-art technology in the brewhouse, this was easily rectified. Being a huge fan of American style IPAs it was heaven to see SEVEN different hops, mainly from America and Australia, being packed into our hop dosing vessels. There was also generous amounts of specialty malts too, which help produce the full-bodied flavour and act as a sturdy foundation for the many hop additions. The brew ran its course, and myself and Ruth Goldsmith (our Marketing and Brewery Tour Coordinator) showed Jan and Heather the sights of Southwold and Walberswick. Whilst sitting outside The Anchor in Walberswick, having a pint of Jack Brand Clump Sagin, Jan was highly amused by the sight of firstly someone in a T-Shirt that said you could catch crabs in Walberswick, followed by two adults walking up the street in their dressing gowns, followed by five ladies driving a tuk-tuk. Ruth, being local, said that this was quite normal. So, after a fabulous couple of days, brewing, entertaining, eating plenty of fish and chips (Jan!), a great beer called Sixpoint Bengali Tiger 6.4% was produced. Full-bodied and packed with fruity, citrus, grapefruit bitterness and aroma. You can enjoy Bengali Tiger at JD Wetherspoon outlets in September while stocks last. Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms, Bristol 25/9/2013. Deep gold with a decent, off-white head. Mandarin and pineapple fruits, some jammy sweetness, solid malts and lengthy, bitter finish with a hint of pine. Enjoyable.

Cask at The Metropolitan Bar (W’Spoons), Baker Street, London. A golden/amber coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Hoppy, tropical fruit aroma. Tastes hoppy, tropical fruit, caramel, malty, slightly sweet and bitter. Very nice IPA.

Cask @ Sir Walter Scott, Edinburgh Airport [200913]
Amber, clear, thin white head
Aroma - Sweet fruity caramel malts, resinous hops, dab of grassy hops
Taste - Sweet fruits, resinous hops, some bitter citrus hops, some caramelised orange, quite sweet
Palate - Medium body, quite oily. Finish - fairly bitter zest with sweet fruity malts, plenty of resinous hops, bitter linger
Overall - Quite decent, but I’ve preferred the other Adnams / US collabs - did have bad cold at time though

Cask at the Tyburn, JDW - London. Pours perfectly clear, rich gold with a tight, lasting white foam head. Lots of floral hops in the nose, lavender, orange, pine needles. Medium sweet flavor with some juicy citrus, a bit of pine, grass and flowers, lime. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish with further floral hops, mild resins, a bit more lime and orange, some bread. A good effort this.

Cask at JDW Hop Pole Hotel, Tewkesbury, Glos’, Saturday 21st September 2013 Pours clear dark amber with small white head, looks superb. Tangy and fruity with a little furryness across tongue and roof of mouth. There is a nice bite, the bitterness is good, slick with a light syrupyness. Soft in mouth, good. A6 A5 T7 P3 Ov13 3.4

Cask at the Greyhound (JDW), Maidenhead. Bright golden amber with a ring of white head; fruity, malty aroma with a hint of heather honey; soft and smooth int he mouth with a fruity taste; the finish is warming with a sustained woody bitterness, and some lingering spice. Not as assertive as many American IPAs, but a good example of what can be achieved at a Uk brewery.

Cask at Victoria Station Spoons, 16/09/13. Golden amber with a decent sized off white head. Nose is orange, grass, touch of hops, caramel. Taste comprises more depth of flavour, bitter hops, orange pith, grapefruit, caramel malts, candied sugars. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, balanced hop bitterness in the finish. Decent cask IPA.

Hamilton Hall Spoons. Almost clear amber beer, small off white head. Palate is smooth and soft and semi dry. Very modest carbonation. Sweet malt with a creamy lactose and toffee vibe. Gives way to piney hops that start sweet but turn spicy. Dry grass and just touch of citrus including light lime. Interesting and tasty but I think it may be too sweet for many.
